This does give me more interest than the trailer did, I wrote it off pretty easily just based on that. Still not a Jack Black fan at all but it might be worth hitting up at one of the local dollar theaters. Thank you, Phelan, the “THAT’S THE TWIST!” line was the best laugh I’ve had all day.
This would have been a very interesting movie for you to review with Brad. Everest you guys were on the same page, but with this movie he really didn’t like it at all. That being said, maybe it wouldn’t have been such a great idea given who actually was there and reviewed it with him.
well, I got to see 15 movies in theaters this year, and the most recent movie I saw was Bridge Of Spies w/ my father yesterday. now that I got a free movie ticket, I plan to see The Martian again. however, as far as Goosebumps is concerned, I’m going to pass on this one.
I read the books as a kid and I watched the TV series on Fox Kids, but just like Are You Afraid Of The Dark? & Tales From The Crypt, I never found these kind of horror shows scary even as a kid. I think you’ll find more creepy things on Ripley’s Believe It Or Not than Goosebumps. hell, even Todd McFarlane’s Spawn from HBO was more disturbing & more creepy, and that’s an animated comic book TV show for adults (when HBO used to have cartoon shows with Emmy award winning quality). from the trailer, it just didn’t impress me enough to watch it in theaters due to the overuse of CGI. I’d rather watch In The Mouth Of Madness instead.
on a side note, here are some more horror movies I recommend to everyone on this site (including the commenters & both Phelous & Lupa): The Frighteners, Dr Giggles, Lord Of Illusions, The People Under The Stairs, The Serpent And The Rainbow, Wes Craven’s Shocker, John Carpenter’s Prince Of Darkness, Nightbreed, Urban Legend, The Faculty, Wishmaster 1 & 2, Wolf (1994), The Exorcist III Legion, Two Evil Eyes, A Cat In The Brain, Hardware, Body Parts (1991), The Devil’s Daughter (aka The Sect), Ticks (1993), Demonic Toys, Carnosaur, Village Of The Damned, Mimic, The Relic, Deep Rising, John Carpenter’s Vampires, Virus (1998), and/or Harbinger Down (2015).
that’s in deed a good choice. but……..I’ve got more suggestions for everyone. both good & bad: Cemetery Man, Brainscan, The Dark Half, Dolly Dearest, Children Of The Corn, The Haunted (1995), Night Of The Comet, The Gate (1987), The Slumber Party Massacre, Maniac Cop, TerrorVision, Motel Hell, Basket Case, Critters, The Funhouse, Hell Night (1981), April Fool’s Day, Bad Taste, Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer, The Howling, The Hitcher, The Changeling, Firestarter, The Stepfather, The Blob (both the original & the 80’s remake), Near Dark, Possession (1981), Cujo, Sphere (1998), Cube (1997), The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Slither, Wolf Creek, The Hills Have Eyes, Hollow Man, The 7th Sign, Bats (1999), Barracuda (1978), Alone In The Dark (1982), The Sentinel (1977), Tourist Trap, Alice Sweet Alice, Frogs (1972), The Brood, The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane, Shivers, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark (1973), Burnt Offerings, Phantasm, David Cronenberg’s The Fly, and the best for last, John Carpenter’s The Thing.
I’m with Allison. None of that Pixar/Dreamworks shit for me. I grew up with Problem Child, Labyrinth, The Land Before Time, The Secret of Nymh, Watcher in the Woods, The Dark Crystal, The Never Ending Story, Return to Oz, & The Nightmare Before Christmas…I never understood why children’s movies continued to get dumber & simpler after the mid 90s.
I was 12 when Goosebumps TV series came out. I remember thinking “Cool, it will be like AYTAotD” & then being disappointed wit it.
Ugh…Never saw a movie I could stomach with Jack Black in it. You put him or Brendan Fraser in a movie & I’m not touching it.
I like some of Pixar’s stuff, but Cars probably went on longer than it should have. It does seem that way, though there was plenty of awful cartoons back then. Not every franchise or toyline needed an adaptation (Rubix? Seriously?).
I actually made a tiny profit for a while buying and reselling used books (late 90s to early 00s), including Goosebumps — but kids’ series books were barely worth the trouble. Read a few out of curiosity and understood their appeal to kids. Probably won’t bother with the movie.
Goosebusters could be great fun: Canada geese that refuse to migrate and defecate all over and attack people to protect goslings are a huge nuisance. Might work as a mockumentary, or a loose parody of Ghostbusters — but I could also see someone ruining it…
I just saw this yesterday and it was weird being an adult among a bunch of kids and their parents. Hearing the kids reactions was pretty funny. Like I read the books in the 90s, but at a time when I was probably too old like Phelous (middle-high school), so it was funny to hear these new kids who hadn’t been in the era it was out talk about it. Jack Black was great but he always is in my book. The kids could have been annoying , and only I would have any hang up with the main kid, but they’re so minor, he’s forgiveable. I thought the dorky friend character would annoy me but he got a few laughs out of me in the end. The movie was a mashup of Gremlins/ Cabin in the Woods; Gremlins for the terrorization of a small town, and Cabin for it’s use of many genres of horror (even if they’re all written from the main source). I loved the creatures coming out of books idea, and it was great they made the plot meta for them to create one story with all the creatures that are out and amok. The dummy story was one of the ones that really got under my skin, so seeing Slappy as a main baddy was a lot of fun. All in all, this movie, fun 😛

I remember when I was a kid the books actually got creepy at some points for me, but the series was corny as all hell.
Dunno. Maybe I read the right books and saw the wrong episodes.

What about Videodrome?
“All hail the new flesh!”

I wonder if Markiplier regrets having Jack Black shill his movie on his channel after this? :-/ Probably not, but still.
BTW, I like Mark and think he’s a nice guy, but still. Ugh.
Hey Goosebumps is out!

This movie was okay, although the monster choices were rather unusual.
