No Resident Evil: Afterlife review? No more skits?! It’s not the Phelous, IT’S THE MASTER (of unlocking)!!
Anyway, great video. I saw the original (not that it changed much since it’s a sot-for-shot remake. Oh wait, it’s in America now, so it’s completely different) and I HATED it. I’m sorry but someone so full of themselves that feel the need to make a whole goddamn movie just to give people the finger because they dare have the audacity to enjoy movies he doesn’t should not be allowed to consider themselves an artist. Also I love how the supposed “message” of this “movie” is that for some reason, people who like fictional violence also like real violence (because it’s not like we watch movies to see things that are NOT real life or anything), yet the movie’s very existence contradicts that point, ESPECIALLY the ludicrous rewind thing. It precisely shows why people like horror fictions: because it’s fiction and no-one really gets hurt.
And one last thing, if watching simulated violent acts is akin to actually committing them, I’d love to hear Haneke explain us what that tells us about HIM, the director, who MADE the family, including a little kid, die.
Another thing I noticed: white clothes and gloves? clubs? Out-of-control kids who torture a whole family just for laughs? Way to rip-off A Clockwork Orange, Haneke. Except THAT movie’s message actually worked, wasn’t up it’s own ass, was well directed, wasn’t hypocritical, wasn’t insulting and actually shared something with the audience. So not only is Haneke a hypocrite, he’s a thieving hypocrite.
…I’m really hoping this is just an early (and evil) April Fool’s joke. =o(
That said, your original Funny Games review is one of my favorites, and I also actually (at least for the single viewing I gave it/only viewing I ever will give it) liked it to a degree. Sure, it’s pointless, stupid, loaded with plot holes and faulty logic (and there’s NO way you can take the whole remote control “I’m rewinding time with the power of menu browsing!” thing seriously), but, for what it’s worth (and going into the movie relatively blind), I enjoyed (for lack of a better word) seeing something that elicited some emotion and was actually kind of disturbing (to me, at least). It’s not high art and it’s not much more than an uncomfortable (or boring, if you can’t find yourself caring about any of the characters) shaggy dog story (or shoot the shaggy dog, I suppose).
Yeah, the door in this movie was just stupid.
But I’d/I’ll always prefer a house door you can never open from the outside without a key, even if it’s unlocked.
Where should i begin to mock you ? First off, locking your door from the inside is OPTIONAL ! So you don’t need to do it. Second: It exists so you can lock up your children inside, so they can’t leave while you’re not aware of it. Third, if you go outside WITHOUT your key while you’ve misplaced it, you couldn’t go inside anymore anyways, for it cannot be opened from the outside then. I still hope this was your actual April joke and not the new Phelous …!
Great vid. I am actually quite a fan of Michael Haneke’s later works like The White Ribbon, but Funny Games is a pretty painful movie to sit through. I’ve had many may arguments with one of my buddies about how I think its boring as hell and he insists its some kind of art movie, with the remote representing the bloodlust in all of us wanting to see thinsg over and over again or some bullshit.
As for the other stuff, the death montage was beyond awesome, and also really showed how much you’ve chenged over the years, heck at first I didnt even recognise you in the earlier ones!
I aint gonna knock the new guy till we’ve seen him althoguh I think you might be playing some kind of trick on us.
If this is your last review then thanks for the many many great reviews, I find it pretty funny how many people seem upset your not doing Afterlife, who cares it just another crappy RE movie and you did a pretty decent job ripping it in your impressions video.

Whoa, this show’s story does take turns indeed! I have not seen the American remake, but I loved the original movie. It was a lot of fun, and didn’t really have any shots that bored me.
All I can say is that this is the saddest day since Joel escaped the SOL and Mike was sent up. The difference is that Mike was laid back and we cared for him. As much as I want to welcome this new Phelous, I fear a darker path will be taken here….a path darker than the original cut of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Little Shop of Horrors combined….All I have left to say is that I’m really frightened at this point. Please let this be some cruel April Fool’s Joke to get it over with!!! I don’t care if it’s a disapointing anti-climatic resolution! Give me the old Canadian Coca-Cola I’ve grown to love…..Still, can’t wait to see where this will lead to…good luck with the lashback is all I have to say.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s April Fools’. The man built zombie rape foreshadowing into a review months ahead of time; he’s capable of an Epic April Fools’ Joke. If I’m totally wrong & the end credits was serious business…I will really miss seeing Old Phelous (since his “voice” would still be there). From what I’ve seen of his cartoons and bits in Mortal Komedy, Tomas is pretty damned funny. I guess the MST3K Joel/Mike analogy works for me. As long as Pearl never makes an appearance…
That said, I’ve been enjoying the changes in the show lately – it’s been fun not knowing where the review will take place, having different endings without the deaths, etc. I always enjoyed the show before, but I like a bit of uncertainty now and then.
The death montage was awesome – I didn’t recognize the lightning bolt one near the end.
Oh, the movie. I have no problem with movies and other media having a message, but can’t stand preachiness. Let the audience think for themselves instead of telling them what to think and feel. And if weird camera angles and shots of nothing make art, I’ll just watch my mom’s vacation videos when she thought she was turning the camera off instead of on. Lots of shaky cam + extended crotch shots = brilliant!
Y’know, as much as I feel sad he’s going, and will miss him now that he’s gone, I feel like a chain of Phelouses will be a very welcome change and mean that this review show will feel truly original. I’m excited to see the new Phelous and I hope he does a good job (as I’m sure he will).
One thing though, is there a set time planned to be between each new Phelous (if there will be more than two)?
As a long time follower of Phelous’s Reviews (I have been watching since the review of Resident Evil: Extinction) I feel that this statement should carry some significance.
My mind is blown. I did not see this coming. For real? You are changing out the CHARACTER that DEFINES the series? Was this entire Doctor Phelous shtick just to set up for a Phelous switch? I just watched this movie last night and yeah it was not good. It was long and boring and those scenes just kept dragging out. I for some reason got the idea of watching movies that you Phelous reviews so I could understand more his frustration but I do not know if I will continue that because A. at least 100 movies spoiled.. (if you can have a bad movie “Spoiled” and B. they are just bad….. I did however watch Day of the Dead after him hating it because I did not know it came out and actually enjoyed it. Even though Nick Cannon acting like a tough black man scares me as much as Obama acting like one.
The person I was watching with cracked me up the look on her face when they rewound the movie so that the guy didn’t die was priceless. The first Funny games review had one of my favorite Phelous endings ever.
Wow I hope everyone was joking with these comments. I mean, it’s obvious now that it was just a joke as it’s been years but still, the first time I watched I thought obviously was a joke, I mean, it fit perfect with Phelous’ sense of humour. I don’t know, maybe everyone’s just really really gullible?
It was really great to see this in context with the other Funny Games review to see how your style evolved and changed over time.
You raise some excellent points with this look back too. Β This movie is trash, and it’s a particularly obnoxious kind of terrible movie; the kind that thinks it’s smarter and morally superior than the viewer.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s April Fools’. The man built zombie rape foreshadowing into a review months ahead of time; he’s capable of an Epic April Fools’ Joke. If I’m totally wrong & the end credits was serious business…I willreally miss seeing Old Phelous (since his “voice” would still be there). From what I’ve seen of his cartoons and bits in Mortal Komedy, Tomas is pretty damned funny. I guess the MST3K Joel/Mike analogy works for me. As long as Pearl never makes an appearance…
That said, I’ve been enjoying the changes in the show lately – it’s been fun not knowing where the review will take place, having different endings without the deaths, etc. I always enjoyed the show before, but I like a bit of uncertainty now and then.
The death montage was awesome – I didn’t recognize the lightning bolt one near the end.
Oh, the movie. I have no problem with movies and other media having a message, but can’t stand preachiness. Let the audience think for themselves instead of telling them what to think and feel. And if weird camera angles and shots of nothing make art, I’ll just watch my mom’s vacation videos when she thought she was turning the camera off instead of on. Lots of shaky cam + extended crotch shots = brilliant!
Y’know, as much as I feel sad he’s going, and will miss him now that he’s gone, I feel like a chain of Phelouses will be a very welcome change and mean that this review show will feel truly original. I’m excited to see the new Phelous and I hope he does a good job (as I’m sure he will).
One thing though, is there a set time planned to be between each new Phelous (if there will be more than two)?
As a long time follower of Phelous’s Reviews (I have been watching since the review of Resident Evil: Extinction) I feel that this statement should carry some significance.
My mind is blown. I did not see this coming. For real? You are changing out the CHARACTER that DEFINES the series? Was this entire Doctor Phelous shtick just to set up for a Phelous switch? I don’t keep up with out-of-video news so I don’t know. I would assume that you don’t plan that far ahead but…
Well, best of luck New Phelous! The irony of a No Sketch policy is hilarious, I wonder if he’ll mind? I await the next video eagerly.
Phelous’ last review? WHAT?! PHELOUS FINALLY DIES, FROM STOCK FOOTAGE NO LESS, AND IT MAKES IT SO THAT I DIDN’T WANT IT!!! WHAT FU-wait. April Fool’s is this Friday. So is this an April Fool’s Joke? The Intro did say “The End of Phelous Part 1”, so does this mean it doesn’t end with this ass-wipe that claims he’s Phelous taking over the show? I hope so. My hopes are that the Time Machine alarm goes off, sending everyone to the ‘Dawn of the Living Dead’ review with Phelous D1 wanting to kill Phelous #2, only for Phelous #1 come in to save the day.
P*S* Sorry for the Ass-Wipe comment. I’m just angry and depressed by this episode.
On the one hand, I now have one less reason to go to That Guy With the Glasses and, though I’ve loved every second of Phelan lampshading the stupidity of skits and plots in internet review shows, it’s nice to know they’re gone from this show at least. New guy might be fun, too. On the other hand, you’re one of the few internet personalities that isn’t a raging douche so it’s a bit sad to see you go. Oh well, good luck with whatever else you do. π
I hope part 2 is just Phelous walking on screen then saying, “Got you!” laughing, then walking off screen.

The original movie was shot in Austria, not Germany. To put that in perspective for you, it’s like the differnce between Canada and the USA.

I just watched this movie last night and yeah it was not good. It was long and boring and those scenes just kept dragging out. I for some reason got the idea of watching movies that you Phelous reviews so I could understand more his frustration but I do not know if I will continue that because A. at least 100 movies spoiled.. (if you can have a bad movie “Spoiled” and B. they are just bad….. I did however watch Day of the Dead after him hating it because I did not know it came out and actually enjoyed it. Even though Nick Cannon acting like a tough black man scares me as much as Obama acting like one.
The person I was watching with cracked me up the look on her face when they rewound the movie so that the guy didn’t die was priceless. The first Funny games review had one of my favorite Phelous endings ever.

Wow I hope everyone was joking with these comments. I mean, it’s obvious now that it was just a joke as it’s been years but still, the first time I watched I thought obviously was a joke, I mean, it fit perfect with Phelous’ sense of humour. I don’t know, maybe everyone’s just really really gullible?

It was really great to see this in context with the other Funny Games review to see how your style evolved and changed over time.
