you know, whenever Raiden/Rayden does anything that deals with time travel, it normally doesn’t turn out too well. think about it, the only reason why the alternate timeline in MK9 happened in the first place, is because Raiden was a sore loser. yes Shao Kahn took over at the end of Armageddon, but at least he did it fair & square which is what the Elder Gods originally intended. but now, it’s like Raiden was acting like a spoiled kid who looses at checkers. and what was the result of the alternate timeline? most of the main heroes are dead, Shao Kahn is literally killed instead of banished, the laughable Reiko Accords are settled between Earthrealm & Outworld (which Kotal Kahn broke), Quan Chi is turned into a little bitch, & Shinnok is let loose to spread his magical Kool-Aid across Earthrealm. there’s more too it that I can mention, but that would require going into spoiler territory. and since you still haven’t played MKX yet, I wont do ruin it for ya. ^-^
bottom line: Raiden + Time Travel = Recipe For Disaster
I have played MKX but it was over at a friend’s place so I wasn’t able to get footage like I was for Until Dawn. I honestly don’t mind some of the alternate time line story stuff because I thought a lot of the original MK story got a bit messy later on as it was. It’s got some interesting ideas and I really liked seeing Scorpion being restored to life. Also Johnny Cage being put in the spotlight was a nice change of pace instead of another it’s all about Liu Kang story. It’s not perfect of course but there is a lot that’s pretty cool.
that’s cool. however, I was rather disappointed with it. sure there are some stuff I liked about it, but there are just too many issues with the story to give it any extra praise either. besides the micro transactions, the story either has it’s villains far too weak, it’s heroes far too op, and far too many conveniences going on. on scene, Kotal Kahn attacks the new heroes and doesn’t even bother looking up at the sky covered in red clouds.
concerning the story before the alternate timeline change, I was actually happy with the series reaching a conclusion. after all, without John Tobias involved, the series doesn’t exactly feel complete without him. Ed Boon may have been a co-creator, but John Tobias created the story, hand drawn all of the artwork, and had a much firmer grasp on the story. my issues with the new MK games started with MK9, the one that’s still getting all of this praise. besides Raiden changing events, the story from MK1 – MK3 feels a bit off. I always thought Quan Chi was merely observing the situations happening around the tournament, not directly getting involved or giving Shao Kahn advice. which to me is the biggest & most problematic plot hole that I can’t overlook. forgive me in advanced if this response is long.
1 – why would Quan Chi give Shao Kahn the idea to resurrect Sindel on Earthrealm where A) it was originally a plan Shao Kahn had for thousands of years as the last resort and B) he only ordered Shang Tsung to resurrect her? while I can easily see Reiko as his former general as a possible scenario, I can’t see Quan Chi willing doing Shao Kahn’s bidding where he has no reason to nor should not he be directly involved in the events of MK1 – MK3
2 – so, if Shao Kahn resurrecting Sindel allows him to step through the dimensional gates & reclaim his queen which keeps the portals open sucking up soul after soul which also increases it’s strength, then shouldn’t Sindel also be kept on Earthrealm to allow Shao Kahn’s plan to succeed? why would Sindel be in Outworld? wouldn’t that potentially hurt his plan? I assume the portal take numerous amounts of energy to keep it going, but just like gears in a machine, you don’t just take the key out of the ignition and expect the machine to keep working. if Sindel is the key to keeping the portals open then the devoured souls is what feeds it. so, if Sindel were to be take out of Earthrealm, then wouldn’t Shao Kahn’s plan would fail. yes, Shang Tsung & Quan Chi are powerful sorcerers, but even they have limits to their magical abilities. a portal that size doing what it did in MK3 would require more concentrated energy than some sorcerer creating a soulnado which makes no sense either since I just assume it was just the core on one of Shao Kahn’s dungeons.
3 – if the portal opening across Earthrealm slowly merges Earthrealm & Outworld (in which Raiden also slowly loses his powers on Earthrealm which led to the subplot of Raiden becoming human in MK Trilogy as well as MK Annihilation), then why would Quan Chi need to create a soulnado to keep the portal active? Quan Chi & Shang Tsung are sorcerers, but their powers are limited to what they are capable of same with Shao Kahn. Shang Tsung can steal souls and create life, yet Quan Chi can’t. Quan Chi can resurrect the dead and turn fallen warriors into specters like Scorpion & Noob Saibot, but Shang Tsung can’t. plus, Quan Chi’s powers are connected to the Netherrealm which is why Hanzo Hasashi no longer becomes Scorpion in MKX and thus removes all of that hell fire abilities he had as well. I don’t think a shapeshifter & a necromancer can create enough energy or wield enough energy to feed a portal, which is why the whole soulnado approach in MK9 felt off and why this is such a glaring problem story wise. the portal was opened due to Sindel being resurrected, the souls being devoured is what feeds that portal making it stronger & more effective, and the magic that was used to resurrect Sindel is what keeps it open.
I know I’m probably putting too much thought into this, but as a fan, this does bother me. and contrary to popular opinions, stories in games do matter especially in Mortal Kombat. again, sorry if this response is too long Phelous, but I love talking about this kind of stuff. if we ever get a chance to meet face to faced, I’d love to discuss about Mortal Kombat with ya. ^-^
I’m not sure if you’ve seen this, but if you want to truly understand the problems with MKX’s plot, check out this video from Gamingsins (aka a subchannel of Cinemasins) –
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvI9FplbM0k
btw, how’s the DVD I made you working out? I was very happy you liked it, and if you like, I can make you a 2nd one featuring more commercials from MKDA through MKX. maybe at some point you can make a top 10 favorite Mortal Kombat commercials video. besides me, most of the credit goes to mostly MKSecrets and other youtube channels that has Mk content on it. the funny thing is that the kind of content you expect to see on a dvd release of the MK films are mostly posted online. which I think it’s about time New Line, WB, & Threshold releases these films again on Blu-Ray that isn’t yet another barebones release since the behind the scenes content, the extra commercials & trailers, the cast interviews & promotional footage, even the rumored deleted ending from MK Annihilation (that was shot but never shown to the public) would make buying those Blu-Ray’s worth it.
So now we know you have played it and the kombat pack 2 was just announced any chance we could see you do a MKX review in the future?
I just got the game for black friday and am loving it.
I don’t care if the review is short, Thanks for your time Phelous
I think that depends on whether or not he even owns a PS4 & Xbox One at this point and if he buys the game himself. consider the fact that the micro transactions probably cost even more than the game itself, adding far more money to spend on a single game with the extra content, even I have to admit that it’s a bit much. but who knows, maybe he’ll review it in the distant future. hell, I’d love to see him do it. at this point, we’ll have to wait & see.
i got the game with all the dlc for $40 on sale during black friday but I sure wasn’t paying 60 at release + 30 for hte dlc
The new combat pack coming out will most likely be 20-30$ seeing as its new and has the alien and leatherface in it
that to me is the biggest problem with gen 8 video games. and the sad truth is that they’re trying to make it more & more acceptable, which I call bullshit. why would you pay $50 to close to $100 extra just for additional content when you can get unlockable characters for free by just playing the damn game? plus, what does the Predator, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, and/or the Alien have to do with Mortal Kombat in the first place? remember when Mortal Kombat was this story about a martial arts tournament which became about a warlord wanting to conquer different realities? when did Mortal Kombat turn into Terrordome?
if NRS wanted more fighting games, then why not just obtain the rights to make Terrordome or at the very least remake one of their more obscure 90’s Midway fighting games? you would think that a remake would be more necessary for something that didn’t originally do well instead of something that was already fine to bein with. with MK9, the DLC guest characters was a bit annoying, but I got over it since it really didn’t bother the overall story. but now, it’s getting rather obnoxious. what’s even more disappointing is when they revealed Tri-Borg. I originally thought that it was just Cryax, Sektor, & Robot Smoke sharing the variations as separate characters to save room and that the name Tri-Borg was just a nick name. but now it’s just a character who controls them.
(sigh) it just seems like they’re making stuff up as they go along which is just even more evidence that they’re running out of ideas. to be honest, they would never have this problem if A) John Tobias didn’t leave Midway (since “1” I think it’s more his idea than Ed Boon, “2” he did most of the artwork for the character designs which are still amazing, and “3” he had a much firmer grasp on the story than both Ed Boon & John Vogal did), and B) they should of just ended the series with MK Armageddon. look, I’m sure everyone wants more MK games, but not everything lasts forever.
and even if not everyone is willing to let the franchise end, they’re clearly running out of ideas. the story is getting lazier & all they seem to care about is cramming as many characters in the game as possible. with MK Trilogy & MK Armageddon, at least it made sense and they were still doing their own thing. that I’m fine with. now, it’s all people seem to care about. and honestly, I think adding all of these unnecessary guest characters in Mortal Kombat is just compensating for lack of originality.
i read your whole thing and I agree on alot of points.
But my opinion on the guest chars is at least its not canon and they are optional dlc
with that said even though its weird having them there they actually fit really well.
The alien is gonna be a chestburster that killed baraka so it has his races arm blades.
+ the new dlc char tri borg imo is sick its gonna be cyber smoke cyrax and sektor as you said but I like it as its not really canon and gives us a way to play all 3
also on top of that who really will be mad/jealous at bo rai chos inclusion besides siro lol
I do hope the next combat pack will be all MK people at least
as I said IMO I really like the new games sure it is super cheesy story telling but so are the old games it does seem from this point on hes just going to go over the deadly alliance story line again with the way liu kang is set up but for me the story is just salad dressing I am very happy with how the gameplay is and am having alot of fun with it even though I have been long done with the story mode.
that right there is the biggest problem with the recent MK games. most fans are far too forgiving for the new DLC. the excuse is that they’re non canon and it doesn’t matter. then it’s ultimately pointless. here’s a reality check: none of the DLC characters have any impact in the overall story nor are they important in the overall grand scheme of things. they are meaningless. they are just there to be there, and that’s it. this attitude of being non canon is exactly why I have such a problem with it in the first place. they serve no true purpose to the game’s story and they have nothing to do with the game it’s based on. all this is, is NRS using these DLC characters to compensate for lack of originality. instead of improving their story and using the characters that have an impact in the story be the main focus like previous titles before MK Vs DCU, they just want to crame in as many characters as they can regardless if it makes any logical sense or are ultimately pointless.
having more pointless DLC characters is no excuse for lazy writing, lack of originality, or having fans pay money just to obtain those characters. and the amount of money to obtain all 8 characters of both Kombat Pack 1 & 2, plus the costume skins, costs more than the actual game itself. in previous games, if you wanted to unlock a character, you had to play the game itself and work hard to earn it.
and most of the characters do not fit into Mortal Kombat despite what the fans say. none of these guest characters are fighters. Mortal Kombat is not Terrordome. Mortal Kombat has and always shall be a franchise of popular tropes, inspiration, and a story that centers around interdimensional beings in a martial arts tournament. it’s not an excuse to have Alien Vs Predator or any of the slasher characters even though it’s questionable if WB owns Leatherface, and I know as a fact that WB does not retain the license for Jason Voorhees anymore. they went back to Paramount a few years ago. and Tri-Borg is not Cyrax, Sektor, & Smoke, he’s a new character who uses their bodies and abilities, but that’s all. it’s a disappointment because instead of using those variations to play as Cyrax, Sektor, & Robot Smoke, it’s just some random cyborg who poses as them.
sure many people tend to like guest characters in fighting games, but it’s getting to a point where it’s way too over done, it’s getting rather obnoxious when you have to pay $40 to almost $100 extra for the extra content on top of the $40-60 you spent on the actual game itself, and most people are way too forgiving for it because it’s cool & it’s non canon. if these characters are non canon, then why should we care about the game at all? why should anyone care about characters in a game that serves no purpose and has little to no major impact in the story or the overall franchise? and sure you can use the “they are non canon so it’s ok” excuse, but in a fighting game that has always been about character development and a deep story, is that really the better way to go? there’s a fine line when having fun means sacrificing story telling, character development, and playing the game to earn the rewards and find the extra content, to just paying far too much money that we don’t have to buy things for a video game that you don’t need. and unlike MK Trilogy & MK Armageddon, that wont last very long.
I’ll give you a short but strong example.
Classic MK:
in UMK3, if you wanted to play as Ermac, you had to fight him and unlock him using a code. simple, easy, difficult, and free. in MK Deception, if you wanted to unlock Noob Smoke in the Krypt, you had to save up the koins you collect in the game. in the original 5 arcade games (including MK3 & UMK3), if you wanted to perform a fatality, you had to memorize the moves and perform them yourself. want to play as Human Smoke in UMK3? you had to press a specific pattern of buttons to access him using Cyber Smoke.
Current MK:
too lazy to perform a fatality? pay $5 for easy fatalities. don’t want to explore the Krypt? pay $20 to unlock everything. want to unlock a character like Tremor or Tanya? then pay $4 each or $40 for the entire pack. want a new costume for your character? pay $4 for some skins. want to play as Cyrax, Sektor, & Cyber Smoke? too bad! this character Tri-Borg uses their colors and abilities, but are not the characters you know & love. didn’t pre-order Goro? well then you can just pay $4 for him even though he’s already in the game and is hiding behind a pay wall in order to unlock him. couldn’t get Kold War Scorpion as a pre-order exclusive? well now you can buy him for $4 making the whole pre-order process pointless and the whole “exclusive” thing meaningless. want to play as Rain, Baraka, Sindel, & Fujin even though only 3 of those 4 characters have p0layable moves in the game and are non playable? too bad! you have to wait for Kombat Pack 2. oh wait, not anymore fans. you’ll have to wait until Kombat Pack 3 in 2016 or maybe 2017 which will be an additional $40. 3 Kombat Packs in 2 years will be $120 even though you paid full price for a brand new copy of the game along with a $300-500 game console.
this is the reason why I think DLC’s are a bad thing for not just fighting games, but most modern games in general. and Mortal Kombat, is no exception.
just an FYI, if this may seem like I’m ranting & raving, I’m not. just trying to be honest. so, sorry if my comments are long. anyways, instead of beating a dead horse, I’ll wrap this up. if NRS wanted to make Terrordome, then just make Terrordome. make a reboot of Primal Rage. make Street Fighter Vs Mortal Kombat, remakes of Mace The Dark Age, Wargods, and/or Bio Freaks, or just make a new IP. just stop making more Mortal Kombat games and just allow the series to permanently retire. they’re clearly running out of ideas, and they know it. so just end the franchise and move on. it’s ok to jump back into the classic MK games, hell I would even argue that they should focus more attention on restoring older arcade games that they have yet to restore like T2 Arcade, The Gird, & Mortal Kombat 4. they could even attempt to do decent ports of MK Mythologies or even MK Trilogy. to those who think it’s still a good idea to keep the franchise going and having more DLC micro transactions, just remember the old saying kids: “all good things must come to an end.”
