In fairness, for being a crazy sewer hobo, it’s kind of impressive Rat King got as far as he did.
Season 9 actually had comparatively good art quality. For example, usually the eyes are just drawn on top of the masks, but in season 9 it looks like there are actual eyeholes. The problem is that it wasn’t TMNT anymore. It’s all about this alien who comes to Earth, and the turtles find out he’s evil, so he frames them and sends goons out to track them, and they have to find a way to warn everyone while fighting off his monsters, and they randomly get new mutation powers that are the only way to beat the monsters, but they can’t use the mutation powers too often because it helps the alien somehow. The first episode had me literally laughing the whole time, because the turtles were constantly angry with no explanation. I read somewhere that it’s somehow a metaphor for Scientology. Also, anything past 1992 is considered obscure, because that’s when TMNT started to decline so rapidly that even its fans weren’t sure whether or not it still existed. If you tell them it ended in 1996, they might not even believe you. Shows like Darkwing Duck, X-Men, and Batman probably had something to do with it.
Rewatching them, I was surprised at how consistent the show’s quality was all the way through the first seven seasons. Not that it ever reached the same animation levels as the first season, but aside from a few odd examples, the writing and animation were pretty consistent throughout.
Which is why season 8 seemed so problematic to me. It’s trying to keep up with the 90’s cartoon powerhouses of Spider-Man, Batman, and X-Men, but that’s not what the show had been up until that point, and that didn’t really play to its strengths. Some will point to the 2003 program and say that it proves a “darker” TMNT show can work, but that show had the same tone from episode one, and wasn’t trying to change its animation style and story structure mid-stream. (And I personally don’t think it worked all that well; it took itself too seriously, and wasn’t all that fun to watch. YMMV.)
Oh, and season 9’s mutation storyline? That was the overarching plot to the second season of the 90’s Spider-Man cartoon, culminating in Spidey’s mutation into Man-Spider. (Stupid, stupid name.) And that story would have aired one season immediately prior to TMNT season 9. So, uh…yeah.
Wow, I didn’t even know TMNT had a 10 seasons run. That would already be impressive for any show, but it’s especially amazing for a cartoon.
And also, it’s very nice to see an Andrew Dickman title card again! How come he hadn’t done one for your reviews since the Christmas/New Year episodes, Phelous?
Andrew Dickman doesn’t do Phelous’ title cards anymore, they announced it around that time when he did his last. They’re still friends AFAIK but Andrew is keeping busy with other stuff. I was excited to see this titlecard too 😀 My theory is that he did this card a while back and Phelous was holding up this video until AFTER the debut of Bootleg Zones. That way, people get used to his love of TMNT and aren’t all “WTFOMG, why is phalous reviewing Ninja trurtles?! UNSUBSCRIBED”….People are weird
I don’t know what time period the Turtles are in this show, but giving Mondo Gecko a 1950’s slang-talking persona seems all wrong given his soulmate friendship with Michaelangelo. (Their are enough 1950’s Dick Tracy enemy rejects in the show!) Given that he has such a male bond with Michaelangelo, I would picture him as more of a rocker personality to compliment Mickey’s surfer gimmick. Of course, we can’t have Mondo be cooler than Michaelangelo, who was one of the coolest Turtles back then, so let’s give Mondo a personality dated about 30-40 years ago. He’s not going to show up that much in the show anyway.
