Shao Kahn brings Shang Tsung back to life so that he can play with an orb.
This orb is part of a crossover which also ran through Street Fighter, Savage Dragon and Wing Commander Academy. Michael Dorn plays the Warrior King who is chasing this orb through all the shows.

Man, I haven’t seen Savage Dragon in AGES. Swamp Thing, Wild Fang, Swat Kats, Wild Cats, Biker Mice from Mars, Carmen SanDiego, Freakazoid, Gargoyles, X-Men, Batman TAS, ReBoot, Earthworm Jim, The Tick, Duckman, Darkwing Duck, Dinosaucers, Robotech, Thundercats, Voltron, Samurai Pizza Cats, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tiny Toon Adventures, Animatiacs, Jem, Rainbow Brite, Captain Planet, TMNT, Ghostbusters, Men in Black TAS…..
Hearing Worf talk to Skywalker…..
Definitely don’t remember Wing Commander having a cartoon, just that All Your Base song.
All Your Base was from Zero Wing. Wing Commander was a different game entirely. I never saw Wing Commander Academy but I enjoyed the SNES port of the original Wing Commander game. It was an early attempt to create narrative within video games and had some neat worldbuilding.
Ah, the USA Action Extreme Team. The cartoon block USA came up with after Ted Turner bought up all the Hanna-Barbera cartoons in order to launch Cartoon Network, thus basically killing the USA Cartoon Express, leaving USA to try assemble the remaining scraps into something entertaining.
Of the AXT shows on this lineup, I only actually watched 3 of them: Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat: DotR since they were 2 of my favorite video games at the time, and Savage Dragon because it had mutants in it and of course any show with Jim Cummings as the lead gets my attention. I never actually watched Wing Commander Academy because I knew next to nothing about it and it looked kind of dull to me compared to the other shows, but I was aware of it.
The Warrior King experiment was…unique to say the least. I too wondered what was up with the King not interacting with the Kombat Krew at all in their episode, or even making an appearance until the end, and then only in silhouette. The Kombatants don’t even say anything about him. Did the MK producers just not want to be involved in this thing, did they think their show was too good for this kind of crossover silliness? I’ve seen what they did on this show; they weren’t.
So ultimately the Warrior King didn’t save his world that we knew nothing about and in the end it perished? Well, that was pointless.
What is it with animated Street Fighter 2 and it’s obsession with Chun Li’s breasts? I understand they can be distracting, but stay focused there, guys.
Also, Shang Tsung wants revenge on Liu Kang. Makes sense. He then proceeds to go out of his way to fight Rayden… Ummm… What?
I have to say, putting a common thread through 4 separate cartoon series was ambitious and would have blown my mind as a child. Unfortunately this era was a little too late for me, and I was a teen being “grown up” when this aired, and not interested in Saturday Morning Cartoons like I am now…again (heh). Still I am impressed at the idea and that they managed to pull it off with some level of competence.
But the idea that it’s an orb with great power connecting these four stories is either a rip-off or homage to the classic adult animated anthology film “Heavy Metal” and the Loc-Nar that was present in each story.
