My parents taped this and made me and my siblings watch it back then.
My mom taped this back then and made me and my brother watch it (I think my sister was too young for it). Did those companies really think their character would keep kids off drugs? Or was it just fashionable to spread the “Don’t do drugs” messages?
I remember a shortened version of the song used to play regularly on TV as a PSA commercial. Had to go to Major Video to rent the full thing.
I was just thinking about this special earlier today. Mostly because of last week’s episode.
Also was the Spanish queen dubbed…in Spanish? Yeah, I know she’s originally Greek, but still. She’d been married to Juan Carlos for 28 years and lived in the country for 15 by then.
I grew up a generation too late for these kinds of PSAs. We did get a weird dance troupe at our elementary school that sang an anti-drug song to the tune of “Le Freak” though.
I would have preferred this.
Congratulations and, most importantly, a big thank you from me for the ten years of entertainment you provided.
This episode really illustrate why I liked you when you first started on that guy you shall not name, of course the sarcastic tone but also the focus on the trivia and details around the media while other review just go right through the film. This is why I really like your episodes retrospective of MK C and MK DotR even though I’m not a big Mortal Kombat fan.
So big thanks and hugs from France for the Good Times (gettit) even when it’s not easy smile.
Thanks a lot!
Great choice for the 10th anniversary episode, Phelous! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the years of laughs. Never stop being your weird-ass self.
P.S.
Please review more ALF. That show was so bad it’s amazing.
Ten years! I shouldn’t be surprised after Brad and Lewis et al have had theirs, but I was. Congratulation! And to many more!
That last segment and the end was just cracking.
I’m not sure this ever made it to the UK, and if it did, I never saw it. If it was 1990, I even would have been the right sort of age (10) and I’m sure I would have remembered something like that.
(I remember the drug episode from COPS – well, I remembered that it existed, because when the annouced the title of “the lowest crome” I though to myself “this is either going to be about some sort of very short person or drugs, isn’t it?”)
That said, I think we might have been spared the later seasons of Real Ghostbusters too, since I don’t remember Peter having a different voice nor, Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters – so it wasn’t all bad..
A show about saying no to addictions came out at the same time I started drinking coffee regularly.
I know you don’t do comic reviews, but….. Hell yeah, tell us about TMNT Ghostbusters.
Alf… Kids Incorporated… Pee Wee Herman… Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood… Dumbo’s Flying Circus… Teddy Ruxpin… Wake Rattle & Roll… David the Gnome… Eureeka’s Castle… Count Duckula… Popples… Wuzzles… JEM… Fraggle Rock… Rainbow Brite… Wild & Crazy Kids… Gummi Bears… Hey Dude… Dinosaucers… Heathcliff… Beetlejuice TAS… Addams Family TAS… Snorks… Tom & Jerry Kids… A Pup Named Scooby Doo… Bedrock Flintstone Kids… Attack of the Killer Tomatoes TAS… Babar… ::Flashbacks::
Yeah… Scooby & Shaggy are the LAST people I wan’t to hear about not doing drugs from.
Pretty sure Alf was adult height. But sure… Add the guy who gives kids beer, but leave Captain Planet out of the picture, Makes sense.
Woulda been great if Chip & Dale could have met Alvin, Simon, & Theodore.
Love the ending. Must have taken forever to edit.
Alf was only about half adult human height. The odd long shots of him were done with a midget in a suit.
Wang Film Productions?
Aren’t they from Taiwan, the same place where Suzhou Hong Ying Animation, the creators of most of (if not all of) UAV’s insane animated mockbuster films are from?
Well, it explains everything weird about this special really.
Why did you list Dave as a villain?
I wanna drink beer like my hero Alf!
I’ve heard on Twitter that a bunch of Youtube animators are collaborating to reanimate this movie.
It’s pretty ironic in retrospect that you managed to review this the same year that both of the Bush’s at the beginning of the special passed away. Coincidence? I think not!
