Holy crap that was the worst dubbing I’ve ever heard! There are Godzilla movies that have better dubbing than this! This is why I don’t want ANYTHING dubbed anymore.

I now recall seeing the Beastformer toy line in stores when I was 6. But I never made the connection to Transformers.
I completely forgot about Beastformers/Battle Beasts action figures. Another Takara/Hasbro creation. Sheep’s real name is Pirate Lion. Original.

This was pretty hilarious. I’m looking forward to part two. I reeeeally hope that the “THIS IS UNICORN” line is on the list somewhere. I laughed my ass off when I heard that, and saw it. What the goddamn hell was up with that weird fat Galvatron design? What were they thinking??
And the voice acting. Wow, just… wow. As much as I do think the actors for the American G1 series were overrated, this dub makes the acting in the original sound like a Bruce Timm production. The dubbing is so bad that I literally cannot sit through ten seconds of this show without my brain wanting to escape out of my ears. Even the animation feels like a downgrade from the American series, despite Japan taking it over this time.
And it’s funny, but Japan didn’t get the Transformers movie until years after the show was off the air, so a lot of the stuff they did in this series was because they legitimately didn’t know what happened between series’ 2 and 3. They even made several projects that were supposed to bridge the gap left by the film, none of which made a lick of sense, but then that’s to be expected.
I was always wondering where some of the audio clips came from during your reviews, I can see why you use lines from this dub, they are AMAZING

I bought the UK DVDs (which contain both subtitles and this dub) years ago. I only watched it subbed for the most part (though on the UK release those had a glitch where some episodes had subs from later episodes on them…) and even in native Japanese, this show was just stupid as all hell. Especially once Fortress Maximus shows up and the Japanese writers apparently forget that Transformers ISN’T Voltron.
Part of the problem it seems is that whereas in America writers were willing to experiment, in Japan they can’t conceive of something like Transformers being respectable or even pseudo-intelligent sci-fi. To them its just pap for children and as such they treated it like it was just a run-of-the-mill toy-shilling show, which led to a lot of the problems you mentioned (Daniel and Wheelie getting elevated probably happened just because they were the kid-appeal characters).
By the Beast Wars era, Japan was actually producing GAG DUBS for American episodes, simply because they didn’t think preschoolers would like the darker edge that a straight dub would’ve had. So yes, Japan also has its very own version of the Subs vs Dubs issue.
As much as I like anime, the Japanese TF shows are a good argument for the superiority of *Western* animation since you have a direct lineage to compare them to.
Lol, that voice acting…. That is some Diatron 5 level shit. LittleKuriboh could have done a better job doing the entire cast by himself. Hahahahahaha XD
