Oooh no, voiceovers and looking into the camera! Nice.

Is it just me or does David Hasselhoff look somehow younger in this?

I think the biggest problem here is the Baywatch tie-in (aside from Garner, of course)

Baywatch was likely popular because it was a dumb beach show with action elements in a carefree decade. It was something people left on in the background on the tiny counter-top CRT TV set in the kitchen when UHF was still viable.

Nights, before it went off the rails into X-Files crazy town, just looks half-assed and underdeveloped.

Hasselfoff, harmon, and Greg-allan(?) could have carried a generic up private investigator show with fresh new setting and characters to play, but they really messed it up by having it run contemporaneously with Baywatch.

One caveat I would add to what Allison said though, is that the continuity issues were probably not as big a problem as she states.

Another thing that I remember from this era, is that continuity wasn’t ever considered important on television, especially for syndicated non-network shows like Baywatch. 95% of shows were still self-contained and purely episodic, not serials. They would jump around times and the aforementioned UHF channels, and there was no streaming of Netflix type services. You had to catch it when it aired, or set your VHS machine.

I wonder if Hasselhoff got any Deja Vu playing a character who fights crime and drives a fancy sports car.

Then again the car is red and doesn’t talk back so maybe not.

Now that I think about it, the red car and narration make this more a terrible Magnum P.I. rip-off then a terrible Knight Rider rip-off.

Angie Harmon in that white blouse, jeans, and blazer combo looks like Deacon Frey.

You know, David, just putting narration into your PI show doesn’t make it all hard-boiled film noir. I realize it’s a genre thing, but it’s just not working for you.

Hmm. Mitch has to be the bodyguard of a hot woman? This was a David Hasselhoff production, you say? Are we sure this kind of plot hasn’t happened before on Baywatch? I swear it seems so familiar. Or maybe it’s just because it’s such a cliche and contrived plot. Heck, I could predict the twist very early on.

Gotta love how much faith or care a network has in a show when they won’t even air the pilot episode as the first one.

Why did they even bother including the nightclub and the PI business? Why not just have Ryan McBride join Baywatch and have her, Mitch and Garner solve crimes together? I mean that’s what life guards on Baywatch do anyway: solve crimes, catch bad guys, unravel criminal conspiracies and bust ghosts. The only real difference would have been Angie Harmon wearing a swimsuit and Garner running around in his shorts.

OMG! I’ve never watched an episode of this show but GOOD LORD! I get a Baywatch spin-off was in order based on the popularity of the show at the time, but were they even trying?! How the hell does something this ridiculous get allowed to air?

Thank you for the reviews, Allison! CA really blew it with you and Phelous (and Marzgurl, etc.). Keep up the great work!

WOW!  I remember when the series was on TV but I had never seen “Baywatch Nights” before…GOOD LORD! I mean, I know that it was smart business to develop a spin off of “Baywatch” based on the popularity of the show but how the hell did this ever make it to air?! Didn’t anyone watch it and think “This is fucking ridiculous!”??

Thank you for reviewing this series, Allison!  CA really blew it with you and Phelous (and Marzgurl and all the rest). Keep up the great work!
