As silly as this one seems to be, I found myself thinking I would still have it in a novelty animation collection of my own over the Goodtimes and Golden Films ones any day of the week, if for no other reason than the consistency and overall quality of the animation was honestly pretty good and I liked the beast not looking like a knock off of the old Robbie Benson standard. The fact that this WASN’T a knock off of the Disney version for a change just made it that much more appealing I guess.
Also I see that Ravishing Reporter April you’ve got back there 😉 No collection is complete without good old Hooker April.
YES! More Old Man! There’s not an accurate enough emoticon to express my love of this running character gag :3
More animated movies!! Yay!!!
I want ‘The Power of Love Will Save the Day’ as a ringtone!!
An anime of Beauty and the Beast is a brilliant idea…only if it were Miyazaki or Mamoru Hosoda and, y’know, not this
New Beauty and the Beast dad is really mean 🙂
Saban; because when I think of the people who brought over Kamen Rider and Super Senti to the US, this is what I think of
new ending? Neat….wiat, Specture version? Oh, that’s just awesome!!
The Beauty in the dust…I love this show
Good thing Saban changed their logo by the time they did the X-Men animated series and Power Rangers. Also, this B&tB adaptation actually DOES have an IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1808958/?ref_=ttep_ep3
I used to have a VHS copy of the colorized version of It’s a Wonderful Life which was made by Video Treasures. Thankfully, I later got the original black & white version on DVD by Paramount Home Video.
I’m still planning on seeing the new Ghostbusters movie, regardless of what the main cast keep in their pants.
This adaptation has bite the dust. (Insert comedic drum roll here)
Ah ok, well I see why I didn’t find it and it’s pretty empty anyway. Though I guess the main page for the show does tell me who the narrator was at least.
Sonic Adventure 2 was a great game.
And on a related note, I’m passing on Ghostbusters not because of its female casting. (Although Melissa “I’m energetic and overweight, please laugh” McCarthy doesn’t help.) I’m passing because the trailers look like crap.
And that’s understandable for sure. I haven’t been impressed with any trailers or the stupid theme song but I’ll still try to give it a fair shot.
Old Man: 1 Beard Father: 0
For all its faults, I’d say this is probably the best version of Beauty and the Beast that you’ve covered so far. Granted, that’s not hard considering where the bar’s been set. 😉
Great review as always. The battle of the fathers was extra enjoyable. Gotta love Old Man!
BTW, that alternate version of “Oh Phelous” is fucking awesome! Is there any chance at hearing a full version?
Thanks! That is the full thing as far as this version of the theme goes.
Who sings it? I could see SadPanda using better stuff to make the music, but it does not at all like him.
I actually specifically looked at the credits to try and find out, but all I saw was Le Sad Panda.
If it’s him, he’s gotten a lot better and apparently completely mastered an American accent.
I made this version of the theme song. Just something I did for fun one day and sent to Phelous.
Grats.
Phelous reviewed a cartoon today. My wish came true.
Oh man, I remember this TV series. Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics aka Grimm’s Masterpiece Theater. I rewatched the reruns over & over & threw a fit when Nickelodeon stopped showing it. This episode, however, was not one of the better ones.
They drew him as a cat, but he looks more like an obese Drow Elf or the inbred result of Mystique sleeping with her son; Nightcrawler.
Fun fact: The people who did the voices from this series all worked on Robotech. For example, the narrator is Exedore of the Zentraedi, & one of Maria’s sisters is the singer Lynn Minmei.
Was Speed Racer half animated or less than half animated, like Clutch Cargo?
Lol, Old Man. Long time no see.
Stockholm Romance for all!
Have you seen the Russian “Forever Fairytales” Version of Beauty & the Beast? Beyond bad voice acting, no lip sync whatsoever, & uncanny valley due to rotoscoping, but still manages to be wonderful & beautiful despite it.
& on Sleeping Beauty, that was one of the better episodes of Tales from the Cryptkeeper, which is a show that sadly failed to live up to my memories of it when rewatching as an adult.
OMG, I’m laughing so hard. XD
“Was Speed Racer half animated or less than half animated, like Clutch Cargo?”
I’m thinking half animated. There’s no superimposed lips on still frames anywhere in the series.
Oh wow, I used to watch this on Nick Jr in my late childhood/early teens. You probably won’t notice until you see more episodes, but there’s a lie right in the theme song: “And every story ends so happily!” Bullshit. The adaptation of “The Demon in the Bottle” actually changes the original’s happy ending into a downer ending. So are you just gonna review every animated Beauty and the Beast you find? If so then I have an old VHS I might have to send your way.
Umm, why the hell is this thing screwing up the formatting of my posts? And why can’t I edit my previous post to try and fix it so its not just some flat paragraph of text?
Haggar’s brother really got the short end of the stick.
Thank you! The look was reminding of something, I just couldn’t place it.
Looks like Voltron, sounds like Robotech.
Before I even watch this video: I actually really like the Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics series. It doesn’t shy away from the original darkness without going overboard and ludicrous, and it included a lot of obscure ones. Admit it, have you ever heard of, say, “The Marriage of Mrs. Fox”?
Oh, and it IS available in English on YouTube. If you feel so inclined, you could go check it out.
How does something turn into dust by the way?
Also, the Beast looks like the one from the 80’s TV series in the cover.
Well, this dub is still better than Glitter Force.
Oh my god, I thought I was the only one that knew about that GOD AWFUL dub for Glitter Force that gave me horrible flash backs to 4kids.
Me and my friends got together and watched the whole dub for laugh.. It was fucking horrible, but fun to laugh at.
Anyways, Glitter Force is also dubbed by Saban. Guess what else they dubbed/adapted that wasn’t Power Rangers/Masked Rider? The English adaptation of Tekkaman Blade called Teknoman which is widely considered their best anime dub/adaptation (even though they edited a bunch of things such as having Maggie a cis-woman instead of a trans-woman/male transvestite). I heard of it from Bennet the Sage when he reviewed it on his Anime Abandon review show.
Now, I’ve actually seen the first episode of Glitter Force and it is safe to say it’s so bad that it’s good. It is still a terrible dub though.
Yeah, this was about what I should have expected; the best of the bunch is usually the one not tagging along after disney.
huh, I just realised this is one of the only anime’s ever covered by Phelous…. heck the only one on this entire web site actually. The only other one is Dragonball… which does make me wonder why you tagged “anime” both on this video, and on “Evil Stick,” but not on the Dragonball videos since it’d be most appropriate on those.
Kinda funny that it’s based on a western tale. And that is sucks…
Evil Stick stole Cardcaptor Sakura art for its packaging, so the tag sort of fit there.
Evil Stick stole artwork from Cardcaptor Sakura, so the tag sort of fit there.
Nippon Animation actually did a bunch of classic western literature adaptations, under its World Masterpiece Theater series. I’ve seen a little of their version of the Jungle Book, and it looks a lot better than this.
Of course, considering Saban’s less-than-stellar track record for adapting anime, I’m sure they didn’t do this series any favors.
Saban may have a less-than-stellar track record, but they DID give us the glorious thing known as Samurai Pizza Cats, and without Power Rangers I would never have learned about Super Sentai.
I’m inclined to think Grimm’s Fairy Tales made it through relatively unscathed.
Also repeating my comment from my effed-up formatting post…. in the TV series version of the theme song, there’s a line that says “every story ends so happily” which is patently untrue. With Phelous’ dark sense of humor he could probably make a joke out of that.
Also, sadly there’s kind of an explanation for the effed up morality in this story. In older societies daughters were usually seen as goods to barter. So him offering his daughter was pretty much his age’s equivalent of “I’ll give you a thousand dollars!” or somesuch. Also the people back then, being backwards barbarian cavemen, usually thought that if a woman was old enough to have babies (which happens at 13) then she was old enough to have sex with, so… yeah…. ancient humans sucked.
We can possibly credit Saban with creating the Abridged Series. Samurai Pizza Cats, anyone?
Hey Phelan…I’ve been watching you for years, but I’ve been too broke ever donate anything unfortunatly.
I started watching in the thatguywiththeglasses days at 3rd anniversary time-ish…. anyway….
You seriously need to see this HAHAHHAHA

Snow white and the magic mirror is exactly what you need in the middle of allthisappy disney ripoff marathon 🙂 I grew up with this glorius incarnation of this story, a magical poop if you will 🙂
I saw it in Norwegian as a child since my copy is dubbed, I watched it just now for the first time in forever and in english. Please review this… it would mean alot to me if you did this even though I’m not a patreon. 🙂
*all this crappy disney ripoffs
*= allthisappy makes no sense XD
I think I saw an English Dub of this on a Christian Channel back in the mid-90’s.
This reminds me of the bible stories in anime style I sometime catch on one if the many christian channels from my antenna. It’s really weird.
I think you were talking about Superbook.
He probably is, but there were a metric ton of Bible anime. Flying House was another one. I used to have a VHS tape called Bible Stories: Stories From the Old Testament which was weird as it would be animated sometimes then shadow puppets other times.
I miss those.
You mean it was a thing?! That’s depressing. One of things I liked about Japan is how christianity doesn’t taint everything there.
Savage, man. BTW, Sonny Chiba was a Methodist.
If he wasn’t an asshole about it, then I hope he did a lot of good for/with his faith.
I doubt you’d reply to this, but do you ever plan on making another “Old Man Reads Creepypasta”?
I know the 2nt one got mixed reactions from your fans, but I really thought it was funny.
Hey Phelan, feel free to ignore this comment, but I was wondering; do you plan on ever making a third “Old Man Reads Creepypasta”?
I know the second reading got mixed reactions from your fans, but I thought they were really funny.
I miss them too. Could someone plz pay him to do one on Patreon? D:
If I had the cash (unemployed right now) I would totally do it.. I can only hope one day someone well donate to his Patreon for more Old Man reads uwu
It was pretty positive overall, there was just one commenter on here that really doesn’t like them and kept posting about it.
You just might be seeing another pretty soon. 😉
Hi, Phelan… I like many viewers don’t comment much when we’re content 🙂
My pinion is that old man is great, mostly when you get to miss him.
If he is in every video he gets boring quickly, but when he skips some videos he’s funny even for a whole video 🙂
Technically the “reverse-color piano” is actually a Harpsichord, and those are traditionally an opposite color scheme from modern Pianos. Anyways, nitpicking aside, I’m glad to see you still covering these crappy direct-to-video fairy tale movies, Phelous. Also, old man is the holy saint of secondary characters in crappy VHS cartoons at this point. None of these other Beauty dads come close.
Actually in a bunch of anime series, the characters look younger than they’re supposed to be. The same goes for a good chunk of J-Pop/J-Rock/Visual Kei stars (*cough* T.M. Revolution *cough* He’s 45-46 years old but looks like a 20-22 year old *cough*).
with all the beuty and the beast reviews, i wonder, does the beast have a huge monster cock? cuz booty needs a dickin
Do people really complain about background info? That’s what makes these things so good, you get a real sense of how big of a train wreck some of these things were.
This movie seems decent but it will never live up to the greatness that is Cory in the House. You should review that anime even though Mobile Fran Nanny SEED is a much better anime in my (, my mother’s, and Allison’s) humble opinion. 🙂
