Gotta say, I really hope they knocked off Visionaries at one point…

And more so I hope if they did Phelous reviews them some time =)

You never heard of Sectaurs before now? They were awesome toys with actual decent articulation for the time and really cool hairy bug mounts that were gloved. I can’t tell you how many near-hearth attacks I was inflicted by my brother creeping on my shoulder with one of those things! Looking at them now, I’m almost tempted to start collecting them, they were really cool.

There was a Marvel comic book based on them as well, but I’m not sure what came first… probably the toys.

Until you actually explained what this was ripped off from, that “Lord of Insects” title just baffled me. What a really pathetic name for action heroes, right? Also, I’m not sure who they thought they’d fool with this, or whether they really expected to gain much, what with it being about as obscure a kid’s cartoon as they could get. But ah well.

I always love it when you cover stuff that’s part of the galaxy hole like this (favourite’s got to be the Turtles Fighters revelation, haha) and this is rather an interesting aspect to it.

Turley Gang? The name alone has me wondering how it fits into the Galaxy Hole. I’ll look forward to the Bootleg Zones episode covering that line. 🙂

Sectaurs were pretty awesome back in the day. They were some of the nicer and more uniquely designed 80s action figure lines. The “vehicles” were giant bug mounts that you would literally put your hand in and control like a puppet. It sounds stupid, but it kinda worked.

The bugs these knock-offs come with are meant to be like the pet bugs that came with Sectaurs, but those were much nicer hard plastic with a button on the back that would make them bite or do something insect-like. The rubbery bugs for Lord of Insect looked like molds of “creepy crawlies” as we used to call them, which often came in an assortment in pegboard bags or given away as prizes at arcades and fairs.

That era gave us a lot of these mystical/fantasy/super science type toys due to the popularity of He-Man, Thundarr, Galtar, Conan the Barbarian, Krull, etc…

    Check out:

    – Power Lords (check out Arkus, just an amazing design for a kid’s toy)

    – The Other World

    – Crystar The Crystal Warrior

As in the old Power Lords comic? If they made the villain designs work, those would have been great figures.

When searching for images of the toys, I saw some comic book covers among the results.

I know a lot of toys got their own run of comics and vice-versa, so I’d just do a google for Power Lords toys and see for yourself.

Arkus and a few other in that line are fairly unique, Arkus looking like some devil-insect-xenomorph thing.

That’s the guy. We had a few issues in a box of comics a cousin gave us, early-80s – the heroes were pretty generic, but I remember the villains had sweet designs.

How do you keep all these guys organized? Do you have a system? You must have a TON of boxes/plastic storage containers.

I’m surprised that they didn’t find a way to include Baltard in this line at all!

I wish Phelous could get the rights to the Galaxy Warriors/Lord of Insects/etc.  I bet he could make an awesome tv show out of them.  😛  XD

The closest thing to bug related toys with a cartoon I can remember is Sky Dancers & Dragon Flyz.

“Oh jeez, is this gonna turn into a porn?” I’m laughing much harder at that than I should.

Sticky? Maybe they’re made from the same type of plastic Rubbermaid Servin Savers used. After a couple of decades, their lids developed a nasty candle-like texture & smell.

I would have suggested scrubbing them down with baking soda water to unsticky them, but I’m afraid it might take the paint off. If it’s not paint & just colored plastic, then go for it.

Yeah, and I mentioned in a past vid that action figures can grow mold in the plastic if they’re not properly mixed.

Of all things, my water filter pitcher seems to be the one bit of plastic in my house that will instantly grow mold if it’s not towel dried immediately after use. WTF Brita?

Damn you Phelous.  I used to never care about toys or Pokemon cards (or Pokemon anything really) before but your Bootleg Zones show got me wanting to find out where I misplaced some TMNT, He-Mans and other toys I used to collect as a kid.  I once had this cool rock that turned into a pteradactyl.  I think it was in the Rock Lords line….

Anyway, now I’m into giant mecha and am thinking of collecting something from one of Toei’s Super Sentai lines, so I’m hoping you do more bootleg zones based on giant (optionally transforming) mecha in the future.  Maybe even some Gundam or (like I’ve asked before) Voltron?

BTW I’ve been marathoning old episodes and I have to note:  Ginrai is pronounced Jinrai.  Yeah, I know, it breaks every rule I ever knew about pronouncing Japanese names, but if you watch Transformers Masterforce in Japanese that’s how they pronounce it.  Also “Beiriifu” is literally just pronounced Bayleef.  Since Japanese doesn’t have consonants they sometimes cheat by having a u syllable at the end, which you’re really supposed to pronounce quickly like you’re embarrased its there.  But I’m almost not sure I should tell you this because its almost better for you to mispronounce names, but whatever.

Finally, I was shocked to hear you use the term “Gerwalk Mode” instead of “Guardian Configuration.”  That makes me wonder if you’ve seen Robotech and if so, if you have any plans to talk about it?

I’m also into giant mecha. My favorite series has to be Gundam SEED Destiny. So, it’s nice having another mecha lover in this comments section! Also, is that just me or do the bugs that the figures come with kind of look like candy? Speaking of candy, I’m currently eating a bag of crispy smores M&M’s as I listen to access’s Mermaid Trilogy.
