What in the hell where they thinking? The most hideous CGI imaginable–like, worse than Food Fight–as a sequel not to their own POS movie, but to the Rankin Bass movie? And they thought Rudolph was a good one to pick a second time why exactly after their massive bomb?

Good god they’re so hideous in this movie… also kinda funny that the characters look closer to their own character designs than the Bass one.

You think this is bad. There is a horrible Frosty the snowman special by Good Times as well.  pervy jive talking Frosty who’s named Snowden of all things. It’s pretty traumatic to say the least.

You’ve also gotta love Scott McNeil. Great actor and such a hilarious, fun guy. He classes up everything he’s in X’D

I really liked this reviw, thank you for getting me into Christmas spirit, thankssss.
That’s some terrible CG animation right there. Everything looks just plastic-y and dead. There are even some animation goofs. The hippo’s furry stole seems to glitch into her thigh at one point, for example.
The “Rudolph 2” cover is actually from a Swiss release, not from a German one. It may have been called “Rudolph 2” in Germany as well, but the version you found is in Alemannic German, which speakers of standard German may not even be able to understand without subtitles. Also, the two voice actors advertised on the cover, Edward Piccin and Philippe Roussel, are apparently extremely obscure even in Switzerland, so I have no idea why they bothered putting their names on the cover.

Say, weren’t the Allemani famous for being good horsemen?  Sorry for the random question.  It just you seem to know your German pretty well.

Great Christmas review! With the big reveal showing a character we haven’t seen before in the whole movie, it might as well have been Siro.

This movie is just awful. Reminded me of Food Fight in some of the dead-eye stares, and it’s a sequel in that it uses the same characters, and about nothing else…

ACTUALLY, in the original airing of the Rankin / Bass Rudolph special, the Misfit Toys never found new homes. Viewers wrote angry letters about this fact, so the ending was redone so that the elves now dropped the misfit toys out of the sleigh instead of generic packages.

THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING THIS, I HAVE BEEN WAITING OVER A YEAR WITH BATED BREATH.

Ahem… obviously, this isn’t as good as the original and it’s super cheesy, but despite the weak CGI, at least it’s good with continuity for the most part. I am impressed with how Scott McNeil did as Hermey and Cornelius. I don’t know why that weird snowman reporter replaced Sam… Also, Queen Camilla’s design is, ahem… interesting. The subplot is kinda like the inverse of the original, which is not necessary.

To be honest, the reason I ever watched this movie in the first place traces back to the very first time I watched Little Shop of Horrors, a.k.a. my all-time favorite live-action movie. Yes, I figured that if a movie or show that had Rick Moranis, it would be worth the watch. I was somewhat wrong, but I’ve only found as little as 2 movies that I truly hated: one was an obscure teen “comedy” from the 80’s, and the other was from the director of the second and third Friday the 13th movies (it’s not horror, but it was horrible). Also, this wasn’t the first animated thing Rick has done. There was a rare Hanna-Barbera cartoon from the 90’s called Gravedale High, where he is portrayed as a human teacher at a high school full of monsters.

Almost every joke in this review made me laugh pretty hard, and the Ghostbusters pillow next to Jinxaweenie is a nice touch since Mr. Cuddles kinda sounded like Louis.

I had a feeling in The Force that you’d review this one next.

2:50- I said it before, and I’ll say it again, “Well, that’s just prime.”

Creepy Pedo Snowman’s laugh sounds like Jon Stewart’s Bush laugh.  Also, he must be a snowman version of Doctor Who, which explains his ability of telling the story and being a part of it.

The animation in this movie looks like it should be for cut scenes for a PlayStation 1 game.

21:18- I never knew elves spoke (and read) in tongue.

I was also thinking Toy Story 2 with the bear’s boring backstory song.

I remember seeing this movie, never thought it was done by Goodtimes though, then again it does show.

Granted, I didnt think it was horrible but some parts of the plot either never added up or just made no sense to the original.  Even with Rankin/Bass sequels to the original with the regression they did to Rudolph, they still put him into interesting and thought out stories.  They could actually work better as side stories to the original than sequels.

Overall though, maybe not Goodtimes worse movie, it still cant hold anything to the original.  Good review there to Phelous and seem like you may be stuck with Goodtimes for a while like Bobsheaux and either talking dog movies or animated Titanic.

A review of this, now? What a delight. I remember seeing this come on TV one year [I can’t believe this was broadcasted instead of shuffled off to direct-to-video, where it belongs], and I had to switch it after a couple minutes just off the animation alone. But was it as bad as I judged it would be?

    [one review later]

    Yup.

Also, personally got no problems replacing Sam with Scoop in this special. Burl Ives died 6 years before this film came out, and I don’t know why but any voice leaving that snowman besides Ives’ makes me irate–such as in the Rudolph game on the Wii [actual existing thing].

Nice to see the xenophobia has died down in the North Pole…never mind.

Ah, nice to see The North Pole’s vicious, sexist laws allowing the oppression of women haven’t changed a bit. Fills you with a warm fuzzy feeling

Hey Rudolph isn’t played by Tender-heart Bear like in the original Rankin and Bass special: movie ruined!

Great review: but why do you have a Beanie Boo with glasses?

Merry Christmas: hope to see another review soon

I’ll give them major credit for sticking to the character design & trying to get the voices close. Makes me think of Slayers Revolution coming out 11 years after Slayers Try, with the same art style & voice cast in both Japanese & English, which I really appreciated.

Pretty sure 1998’s Reboot season 3 still looks better than this. They could have at least put more effort into the shadows.

::Sees Ghostbusters toy in your office:: So I’m sure you’ve already heard that a new Ghostbusters board game was released this year?

Looks AND sounds like the pink hippo from Animaniacs.

    A flashback within a flashback.

Aside from Orko, the Toytaker looks a LOT like Vivi Ornitier, the black mage from FFIX.

& that bear would go on to star in Among the Sleep, where Markiplier would continue to insist that Bear hadn’t changed his evil ways.

correction, Beast Wars. (sigh) still can’t edit comments. but yeah, early 2000’s CG animation is garbage. funny how they can’t make anything look good in this yet they could make Glacius look good in Killer Instinct 7 years before this thing came out.

wow! this is just terrible. almost 95% of sequels to Christmas specials never work. it didn’t work with A Christmas Story, it didn’t work with Jingle All The Way, and it didn’t work with this one too. hell, I’d rather watch Home Alone 2 at this point, at least that has Tim Curry & a Talkboy.

also, I’ve seen better early CG animation in a 90’s Toys R’ Us commercial. it’s kind of pathetic that they can’t get CG characters to look right in an early 2000’s animated video yet I’ve seen early 90’s CG look better for Glacius from Killer Instinct in 1994. even the CG animated for the character Blizzard in the opening intro to the PSX & Sega Saturn ports of Primal Rage are better than this. and again, this is the early to mid 90’s we’re talking about here.

on a side note, who else besides me would love to see a Siro Christmkas Special? “Siro: The Greatest Mortal Kombat Christmas Special!!!” we can get cooking bits with Scorpion, Santa Kahn, Frost The Snowbitch, Reiko The Red Clad Reject, and many more. hell, I’d support it if you were to make it. Santa Kahn demands it!! ^-^

(not to self – we need a team of rejected Dark Knight Rises actors to plant an idea into Phelous’ head.)

Unlike the other Rudolph movie, I know I’ve seen this one. I remember Hermie’s mobile dentistry van and the return of many old characters.

I never knew this was a Good Times production. I also wasn’t aware of the cheap animation quality, though I was a young kid at the time and figured it was a more modern sequel to the Rankin/Bass movie.

Dear GOD. That is some UGLY CGI. Honestly reminds me of the Donkey Kong Country TV show. BUT WORSE.

And those songs… good god those songs… Why do some ear worms have to be terrible?!

Man, it takes a special level of carelessness to ignore continuity like that for what’s supposed to be a sequel. To quote Jerry Seinfeld, you don’t just write a Murphy Brown. You have to watch the show, study it, get a sense of the characters, how they relate to eachother. Or you can just be cheap and lazy and just make it feel like a very, very, very, very watered down version of the original.

I didn’t realize until of couple minutes into this that I’ve seen this movie a few years ago when I was younger. I had no idea this was a Good Times film.

Now looking back on this I remember not really caring that much for this movie. It just made me want to watch the original instead. It is cool though that the characters for the most part sound and look like the original. But, the animation is really bad and the story isn’t really that great. Those songs are pretty painful as well.

Anyway, great review and have a Merry Christmas Phelous! 🙂

Btw, I saw this movie in the bargain bin here, and it has TWO major issues:

-Firstly all cover art is hand-drawn, misleading the buyers that it is traditional animation

-Second, the background shows a lot of the misfit toys… including the teddy bear!!! AKA basically spoiling the reveal of who the Toytaker is. ARGH, as Shao Khan would say. 🙂

Can we expect more “Old Man reviews” in the future?  I love your impressions of that guy. 🙂

Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa has to be the worst movie I’ve ever seen! The songs look like they came straight out of a Calliou episode, the CGI is the worst I’ve seen, and the story is more cliched than The Christmas Tree (1991)’s! Fun Fact: That movie’s back story was like a real life creepypasta in that it was lost for almost 13-14 years until some man found it on Vimeo in 2015. Believe in Santa is truely the Crybaby Lane of christmas specials.
