We rented this from the video store forever ago. I remembered that it always had this trailer for other MoonBeam Productions, but among them was this series about a kid travelling through space and time. I swear it was connected to this somehow.
Anyway, long story short he becomes a pet/toy to a giant baby alien (and I may be wrong here) but the giant alien reminded me of Mac from Mac and Me.
I want to say another “episode” involved dinosaur-knights. I feel like I’m making this up but I know I’m not.
That’s the Josh Kirby series, and Phelan and I just watched it! I used to rent those a lot too, and the Dino-Knights one is the best. The others steadily get worse and worse, at one point they meet up with a race of mushroom people. It’s like the writers were seeing what they could get away with before someone said it was too stupid.
Oh my god, I’ve had vague memories of the Josh Kirby for so long without remembering what it was called and almost thought I’d just imagined it from how stupid it all was. It’s such a relief to know the title and that it was an actual series!
I had to make an account for this one. I have such fond memories of Prehysteria, hell, for a lot of Moonbeam stuff. Particularly Prehysteria 1 and 2, Pet Shop, and Remote. They were films I rented a lot. I’d love to see more reviews for Moonbeam’s stuff, especially Pet Shop.
As for Josh Kirby Time Warrior? Thank you so much. I remember specifically renting “Eggs from 70 Million BC” but I couldn’t for the life of me remember what the hell it was called or even any details beyond the worms eating their ship and there was a Doc Brown-esque character. I honestly thought I’d never figure out what it was called, but I guess I never thought to link it to Moonbeam.
So… do we have Josh Kirby Lupa/Phelous review series to look forward to?
Looks like the dinos in Prehysteria look more real than the CGI dinos in Jurassic World.
I remember Prehystria from my love of dinosaurs as a kid from The Land Before Time to the Jurassic Park movies and even all the bad dino SyFy movies to. If you think about it, dino movies never really get old or all that bad if either CGI or practical effect or regardless of budget. Since most of those movies tend to be stupid fun or just filled with over the top action.
Thanks for the nostalgia trip there Lupa, that was so my childhood when it came to renting movies.
I was on of those fortunate enough to see Jurassic World (twice; once in 3-D), and dispite what The Nostalgia Critic said in his review, I loved it, and it diserves its big bucks at the box office.

6:28- Those cute little dinos got that cake out of the fridge, because the Kool-Aid Man is red. THAT’S why.

Meh… While I don’t think JW wasn’t a horrible movie, it just came off as a cheap rehash of the first movie. Sure it was “bigger” and had “more teeth”, but it lacked the wonder and chemistry. Also, while I generally love seeing references to previous movies, the ones JW made to JP were just is so frequent that I actually got sick of it after a while!
I may be alone, but despite like the first movie, I never thought of it as any kind of classic. It had a great score and groundbreaking special effects and decent acting, but the plot was a severely watered down, simplified version of the novel (which wasn’t perfect, either), some of the character changes were strange, and the third act will always seem rushed and short to me after all of the buildup.
Seriously, after the T-rex attack the movie basically loses steam, becomes very episodic and just sort of plods along to the climax as far as I’m concerned. It’s in that section of the film I can feel everything that’s missing from the novel that occurs between the T-rex breakout and Grant and the kids returning to the visitor’s center that was just cut from the movie entirely or reduced to a handful of quick scenes to shorten the film.
Jurassic World, for all its faults, has more action taking place out in the park among the dinosaurs, and pretty much gives me everything from the novel I wanted out of the first film’s third act but didn’t get, to the point of plundering plot points and parts of setpieces from the novel in some cases. XD

And I liked Rico constantly building up to unveiling the dinosaurs and going, “Behold, I give you prehistoric life!” and then opening the box and it’s something else. A cliched gag to be sure but something about the way he says it made me giggle.
Wow, it’s just dinosaur week, isn’t it? “He’s horny.” You know, for kids! Actually, that sums up most of this movie, it seems like. Another great video, Lupa.

I was fully aware of this film growing up, I just never came around to watching it. in either case, nicely done Lupa.
if there’s one movie I can recommend you to review that I did actually grew up watching on VHS, it’s a 1980’s film called Batteries Not Included. it doesn’t have dinosaur, but it does have a family of living UFO’s. I still watch it from time to time, and it does bring back some old memories. one way to describe one of the main characters (Michael Carmine) is if John Leguizamo & Lou Bega had a love child.

OMG!That goon is “Chef” Louie from that other Moonbeam movie, Remote! I kinda liked that one as a kid, wanted that remote control mountain climber as a kid.
Holy crap, that actor who played “chef” Louis in Remote and that big dumb goon in Prehysteria, Tony Longo, passed away 3 days ago. May he rest in peace.
I don’t remember most of the nonanimated stuff I rented as a kid, but I do remember these little dinos. I must have rented Prehysteria 2 it at least 3 times, maybe 5. Despite the 2 on the box, I guess I didn’t even know it was a series, because 2 is the only one our Major Video carried. It’s probably also the only Moonbeam Ent. movie I’ve ever seen.

Oh man, I was too old for this when it came out, but I think my little sister rented it. I remember the genre and I never saw it first hand. But this was a fun watch!

Is it me, or was the child lead cast because he looked as much like the HOME IMPROVEMENT kids as possible?
I thought he was cast because he’d been in Last Action Hero. Or was that after this?
