to this very day, I still love the original Love Bug film and I have a bit of nostalgia for the other sequels since I grew up with them. strangely, I have not seen this film nor Herbie Fully Loaded. the only other car related TV show I remember watching growing up which I highly recommend you both check out in a future review is the highly underrated NBC TV series Viper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u95IHZ1dnNI
I wouldn’t classify it as a reboot, since Dean Jones reprises his role, albeit as a minor character.
I forgot to mention in the other post that the origin story was my least favorite part of the movie.

I’m still not sure about this format… The two of you see a movie together then sit down and just talk about it. It’s really just a podcast.
A podcast has its merits (“cozy” feel, potential for improv/spontaneity) but the conversations you guys have are more giggly and mumbly than funny. I think you two are at your strongest when you’ve properly prepared something: for example, your Birdemic II review was an excellent work of clever writing, comic timing, editing, effects, skits, voice overs, etc. Phelous, I love your Crocodile, Boogeyman, and In the Name of the King reviews. Allison, your Baywatching and Charmed reviews are fantastic. (Actually, Allison, I would love if you applied *that* format to Xena and Hercules!) 🙂
A podcast is all well and good, but we already have the Supernatural podcast (and I wonder if that’s as popular as your regular reviews.)
Now it’s looking like this site will became nothing but podcasts. 🙁

That was just great and I do like most everything involving Bruce Campbell. This is still a vastly better movie than the Lohan version in about every way. Although I would have like to see Bruce fight off auto deadites, that would have been AWESOME.
Still though, that was just great and I did like the scene along with the line about owning an unregistered devil car. Reminds me that I need my devil car to be registered to, and that I dont want it to fly off a cliff in an evil race and create a bit to hell as well.
Oh, best cross over every, Bruce Campbell and SIRO THE GREATEST MORTAL KOMBAT CHARACTER. I want to see that happen, and toss in auto deadites and I am sold.
We watched this at school when it came out on VHS and all I can really remember about it is that I was bored out of my mind, but here it seems hilarious. I guess little!me just really hated volkswagen racing beetles.

Like to the Kindergarten Ninja review, I simply can’t finish this video. The Big and Hairy review was helped by the presence of Phelous and by how ridiculous the material is, but this just fails to entertain me. It really feels like a lot was lost in the transition from the excellent OLP to the new Movie Nights, the format is essentially a glorified vlog and you come off as rather insecure in these videos, so I don’t find them particularly compelling.
It takes a lot more for me to give up on a reviewer, so I will continue to check out your material and hope that you will improve. I know a lot of people feel the same way I do and I hope they will do the same.
It doesn’t hurt to mix things up from time to time to avoid getting stale or at least feeling like they are.
Not sure how that is relevant here. The new format is here to stay, there will be no “mixing things up” with the old format. And even if there would still be videos in the old format, it actually would hurt to mix them up with these videos, because these videos are just flat out bad (this is obviously an opinion not everyone disagrees with, but quite a few people do, as evident by comment sections here and on blip).
P.S. The “Report comment” and “Reply” buttons are broken for me, it took me quite a few tries to be able to type in this field and I have accidentally reported the comment I wanted to reply to, which somehow did not require me to enter a captcha. Sorry for that. I would recommend changing the report system to require captchas.
I mean that she probably made the Movie Nights to prevent things from getting stale.

To be fair, I don’t think they had much to work with.
The new format works really well as a double act. The first episode felt a little awkward, since you had nobody to react to or who could react to you, but with Phelan there you both “pop” naturally, and it’s a lot funnier.
Yeah, watching the one she just posted today, I was reminded somewhat of what they do at Red Letter Media. Maybe Allison’s trying to go for a thing along those lines, which isn’t a bad idea. It can work, I think.
The set she’s using looks great, and I love the movie choices. I dunno. I think she (or, sometimes, they) should be a little closer to the camera, in order to improve sound quality and maybe give the reviews a bit of a more personal feel. Otherwise, I have few suggestions.
Generally, I like the new format, and I realize it’s a brand new show, so she can always tweak little stuff in the ensuing videos. I look forward to future installments.

Now I’m imagining The Mummy if Bruce Campbell had played the lead…
Bruce Campbell would make The Mummy and its sequels so much better. He just has better charisma, able to pull off one liners, and just makes the movie that much more entertaining in either action or comedy. That and if you give him a chainsaw and shotgun, he would own the Mummy without much trouble as he is nothing more than an Egyptian deadite.
For me, the echo-ey audio is quite distracting. And it also makes it hard to understand you both sometimes.
Probebly the only love bug movie I never seen or was even aware of until now or…the movie was so boring that I cant rmemeber it!
Love background setup. Ill say the vieeo format is improving. Though like others have said, I feel the same way how I prefer the oldformat and I would lauph a lot!
You know, Allison, if you found the old format getting stale, maybe it’s time you moved on from the reviewing scene altogether. Really, Internet reviewing is entertainment for people like me, but when you look at Doug Walker’s crowd you get mostly fat, sweaty guys in pretentious hats reviewing bad animes or old computer games, still living in their parent’s basements at the age of 30. I can’t watch the others on TGWTG– you’re different because you’re not an “angry reviewer”– you have a sense of humour about the whole thing.
You mentioned that you moved into this new format because you felt the old format was getting stale. But maybe that’s because the nature of the job is inherently stale. I would never have known about “The Love Bug” unless someone I enjoy listening to made a video about it, but at its heart, stuff like “The Love Bug” (basically anything Doug Walker would review) is cultural detritus. It’s garbage. You’re spending all your time immersing yourself (and using your talents) analyzing and critiquing dreck.
My point? Why not get something you could fall back on. If you explained to your fans that you want to go to university or college and need to take a two-four year hiatus from Internet reviewing, you could explain it to them on blip or this website and, while you’re doing your studies, make a weekly or bi-weekly vlog in the same format as Movie Nights. Honestly, just seeing a movie and then talking about it (like what Movie Nights is) must be a lot less time consuming than what you were doing before. And, a weekly vlog like that would show your followers that you’re serious about returning to Internet reviewing in the future, once your studies are finished.
What could you study? Well, by the looks of things, you’re living with Phelous now, so I’m assuming you two are in Canada. Tuition is much cheaper in Canada than the USA, and we also have an aging population– in the coming years, there’ll be a surge in demand for skilled healthcare workers. In fact, I know there’s demand already in the US– really, for all over the world. And, if you already have a degree in something else, that will shave two years off of earning another degree. (I’m a year older than you and I have a BA, but I’m planning on taking Nursing next year, after doing some online courses and working abroad. We’re still young, Allison! We are!!!) ;P
Anyway, I’m only leaving this message here because I like your stuff, I know talent when I see it, and like me, you’re still young, have much to offer, and have plenty of options. If Internet reviewing is your passion, then vas-y and forget all this– but ask yourself why things felt stale, if it’d be wise to have something to fall back on, and if you’ve ever had any other kind of meaningful work in your life.

I’ve been getting mixed reactions about the new format, which is fine and not unexpected. Any kind of change is difficult, and won’t always be popular. But since, like you pointed out, this was a change also for my own benefit, I would call it a success. I’m far happier putting these together than I had been making OLP for a long time. Which isn’t to say that I dislike my old work, but it was time for me to change. And I did.
I feel, perhaps, you don’t understand the nature of what OLP was about. You say I’m spending my time on “dreck” when, all along, I’ve always reviewed things that are mostly crummy. Why? Because I love terrible movies! That’s why my reviews are so positive most of the time! That’s exactly the thing that appealed to you! And, like you said, you wouldn’t have heard of The Love Bug unless I’d made a video about it. I love telling people about things they might not’ve heard of or forgotten. Do you want another review of The Dark Knight? There are plenty of people who have already done so. Point being, part of my stamp is reviewing “dreck” like The Love Bug. I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t.
I updated because I felt the format was stale, but I still love reviewing movies. My way of making it feel fresh was updating the format. And I’m sorry you don’t like it, but don’t presume that means I’m tired of what I do. I can’t help but feel like these suggestions to go to college and get another degree are stemming from your dislike of the format, rather than thoughts about what I’m actually doing. I didn’t get into movie reviews to get a job I could “fall back on.” I’ve had jobs before this. I do this because I love doing it. I have no interest in nursing and suggesting I get a degree because it’s stable sounds like something a parent would say because they don’t think being an artist is a “real job.”
And no, I have not moved to Canada. Phelan is visiting me.

There is so much wrong with what was said, and Allison addressed all of it, but I find it super annoying and stuck-uppity to tell someone what they’d be suitable majoring in without knowing them personally. (“You’re a woman, how about nursing?”)

Thank you for your message and for clarifying things. I’d just like to clarify: I think it’s brave to be following your passion, and Godspeed.
Can I tell you a bit about myself? Right now, I’m in the oil fields of Alberta. I’d been roughnecking out here for about eight months—hard, physical labour in an environment filled with dudes who’re mostly interested in partying, drugs, and prostitutes. No one is interested in “art” and if you have passion, you’d best keep it hidden. Despite this draining atmosphere, the salary’s good. A year out here and I’d have enough cash to cover the cost of university.
But have you heard of the falling prices in oil and gas? Everything out here is crashing. All the guys who usually make $10,000 a month are saying how much they’d love to have something to fall back on. Instead, they’re going to have to hibernate for six-eight months and live off of life savings—those who have life savings.
Me, I’ve got a BA and I’m going to teach overseas until A.) I have enough saved to go back to school, or B.) the oilpatch picks back up again. A BA isn’t much (rather than “Bachelor of Arts” we joke saying it stands for “barely anything”) but it’s enough for me to fall back on to let me have instant work overseas in a pinch. That’s all I meant… pursue reviewing, by all means! Devote your life to it! But it wouldn’t hurt to have a skill or certificate or something to fall back on to branch out and discover new interests, interests/skills that you could use in being a critic—or, like the guys out here, in case you need money quickly. **I didn’t mean drop everything and get out of the review scene altogether!**
One final note: it’s true, I’m not a huge fan of this new format, but please don’t think I was in any way trying to attack you with my comment suggesting you try studying. I didn’t discover I had a passion for medicine until I began volunteering at the local hospital here and I began studying anatomy. Now I have the dream of being a doctor. People don’t discover passions and interests until they branch out and try new things. I remember the word “staleness.” I just thought that if work felt stale, maybe that’s a sign that a career is devolving into a job. I’ve been writing a book now for a few years, picking at it in the evenings and weekends (everyone’s got at least one novel in them—this one is mine.) But I can’t imagine being a fulltime author. But you’re not me. So I’ll leave you be and I’ll keep my “parental” comments to myself.

The only Herbie movie that I’ve ever seen was the Lindsay Lohan one. However, this looks pretty entertaining.
I first heard of Herbie through that movie (Herbie Fully Loaded).
For some reason, the reply option wasn’t working for me on your comments, but I would like to commend you on trying to update your style, Miss Lupa. I’ve been watching your reviews since the beginning and always found them a huge source of entertainment and chuckles. Sometimes my sister and I quote your funnier lines off and on. I think what people are commenting on is the kinda lack-of-script set-up of the last few Movie Nights. It seems more like a podcast, which is not to say it’s a bad thing, and I love seeing you guys riff things. But I do enjoy the amount of work put into the scripted reviews, like the awesome “Time machine I found at a yard sale” and other reviews of both of yours. I liked it and hey, I didn’t even know Bruce Campbell was in a Disney tv movie at all so that was awesome to find out 😛
As for your life and studying for a degree, that is all up to you. I do enjoy your show so keep doing what you love! And if you have any more Cynthia Rothrock, you know I’m down for that.
