    yes! more conquest reviews. ^-^

on a side note, this year marks the 20th anniversary of Mortal Kombat 3 / Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 as well as the 1st Mortal Kombat movie. I wish Warner Brothers can release a proper blu-ray release of the 2 films that isn’t bare bones and contains the behind the scenes documentaries, trailers, bloopers, videos on how they brought Goro to life, and the deleted ending for MK Annihilation. I also wouldn’t mind a dvd release of MK DOTR since I’m not expecting any special treatment on that show. but it would be nice to have the complete series on dvd & blu-ray as well as the 2 films getting a proper re-release. that plus Netherrealm Stduios has yet to give the fans a proper arcade emulated ports of Mortal Kombat 4, The Grid, or even Terminator 2 arcade.

Shang is from Earthrealm? You can get guys from other realms to fight for your side? Is there anyone running this tournament, or are they just using the honor system? If they aren’t using the honor system, then why does Shao have to point out that Shang’s match doesn’t count? Come to think of it, why is any of this nonsense even happening?

Shang Tsung being from Earth is actually a problem present in the game’s canon as well.
The scapegoat thrown around for why his victories count for Outworld instead of Earthrealm in the tournament is that he bound his soul to Shao Kahn’s in exchange for power. Though if he did something like that you’d think he’d die if Shao Kahn did and he would make plans with Quan Chi to do just that.

the biggest problem in my opinion is why Quan Chi resurrected Sindel in Earthrealm in MK9 and then all of a sudden she’s in Outworld. wouldn’t it make more sense if Sindel was to stay in Earthrealm to allow the portal to remain open during the events of MK3? if she’s the key to allow Shao Kahn to step through the dimensional gates and open the portal, then wouldn’t Sindel keep the portal open if she were to remain in Earthrealm? if she went back to Outworld, then how would the portal still be open? also, it was originally Shang Tsung who resurrected her, not Quan Chi. this is why the series just isn’t the same without John Tobias involved since he had a better grasp on the stories & kept things consistent.

another problem me and my younger brother tend to have with the story is the switch between Smoke being a cyborg to Sub-Zero being a cyborg. the switch didn’t really make things any better since a majority of the Earthrealm fighters are now dead and it was only up to that point where things started to drastically change. not only does this make Sub-Zero weaker as a cyborg and Smoke stronger as a cyborg if you compare the 2 timelines, but it also makes Raiden a sore loser if you stop and think about it. Shao Kahn won fair and square at the end, but I guess that wasn’t good enough for the god of useless.

The character of Bo’rai Cho had the opposite issue, he’s from outworld and his backstory stated that he didn’t fight in Mortal Kombat because any victories he had would count for Shao Khan’s side. Anywho, great show as always, I kinda miss good ole 90s cheese like this, shows these days don’t seem to have the same charm, they take themselves too seriously.

I agree. I just watched an old episode of Angry Beavers on demand, and it instantly continues to remind me why tv series from the 90’s and early/mid 2000’s are far better than what we have now.

I think Shao Kahn has soul stealing powers here because the creators decided to latch on to what Goro said to Kano in the first movie, that “Shang Tsung learned dark magic from the Emperor himself”, or something like that. granted, it’s a stupid reason, but it’s the only one I can think of that makes any kind of sense.

Heh, maybe, it’s really stupid to see in practice though and obviously derailed this episode’s story.
Also it’s funny Kahn never did that in the actual 2nd movie if that’s what they were hinting at.

yeah, the way Goro described Kahn, and the way he looked at the end of the 1st movie, you’d think he really was some mystical being of immense power, conqueror of worlds… but in Annihilaton – only some green fireballs and opening the portal to Earth, and even not by himself. the choice to cast Tompson and to make Kahn a whining daddy’s boy made the main antagonist of the game look more than pathetic… this will never stop baffling me.

Is it weird that I loved this show, but never really got all that into the games?

Anyway, a lot of the never-mentioned-again plot threads could possibly be explained by the fact that the show never got a second season.

That’s really bad writing to set up a bunch of plot points in one season and then never plan to mention them again until the next. And obviously some of the ending twists all ready got over written by new plots they decided to do with the characters.
Conquest did seem to like bringing things up after a lot of the audience probably would have forgotten them though.

The lingerie is yesterday’s shock, today, it’s Shang Tsun dressed as a 19th century Russian peasant.

These scripts were written by chimpanzees. If you stood behind them pointing out the inconsistencies, hypocrisies, & how it clashes with the games, it would only confuse them & fry their logic processors. It could possibly be worse than Charmed, only less contrived & with more comic value.

Conquest has to be a terrible attempt at meta commentary on how the Mortal Kombat games just mess with continuity and add random crap as they go along. I just can’t accept how bad the writing is, even for a cheesy 90s genre show.

Anyway, I’m really glad you’ve picked these reviews up again. When one didn’t come out for so long I actually went and watched the remaining episodes – it was one of the best/worst TV experiences of my life. The ending made it all worthwhile… I think? I’m really looking forward to hearing you talk about that. And the upcoming Reptile episodes. They’re truly something special.

My knowledge of MK law is minimal, but didn’t Shao Kahn know sorcery in the game? Not that it makes a difference, since he doesn’t in Conquest (outside of that one scene). I always thought Shang Tsung could fight for Outworld because his father was from there whilst his mother was from Earthrealm, don’t know where my mind got that from. And “Shang” sounds fine to me, since I’m used to it as a given name. Calling Johnny Cage “Johnny” though? That’s just wrong.

So I’ve tried watching this episode a few times now over the past two days and I keep getting an error message:  “Sorry, we’re unable to play this episode.”  It gets through the ad just fine, but then screws up at the video.  I didn’t have this problem with the previous episode or Lupa’s new Baywatching episode.  Blip didn’t work either.  Any advice?

Same here. I actually thought it was a site error and ignored it to watch at a later date. I came back to watch it now and I still can’t! This is whack, yo! 🙁

Phelous you do remember the part where Kahn actually does have the ability to take souls himself right? It’s what happened in MK 3, it’s how he was able to create Ermac. That is also canon with the cinematic continuity too.

Goro: You fool. You know nothing. He enslaves souls! He learned the black art from the emperor himself.
