Wow, I think the most frustrating thing about the last few seasons is the characters going in circle about the whole normal life vs saving lifes – going as far as having the former taking precedence over the latter. This BAFFLES me. All those clips you showed of Piper or Pheobe beratting Paige for trying to help people had me pulling my hair off my head. Saving lifes was the premise of the show’s early seasons, how could you… why.. ugh… GAAAHHHH!
You know, around the same years, there was that other show, it was called Buffy the Vampire Slayer… In that show, a 16 year old is given the monumental task to save the world from vampires and demons (the actual scary kind…). Sure, she too has trouble dealing with the same issue in the beginning, but damn she was 16 for god’s sake, she pretty much had her youth taken away from her. But when she’s asked to literally DIE for her duty, she does it. Selflessness and saving people were always her priorities and she never turned her back on that, ever. The Charmed Ones? Three fully grown women who can’t be bothered to have a sense of duty. They are without a shadow of a doubt the most selfish persons in existence. “Sorry can’t save you life, I’ve got a date I need to get to!”. I can understand them having problems adjusting or balancing their normal life and witchcraft, but goddammit this is season 6th! This should’ve be resolved ages ago!
I will state that yes, I’m a dedicated Charmed fan. In fact I still love the series to this day. However after watching some episodes recently i do also want to say Lupa did make a lot of mistakes in some of her points of the show. Particularly the earlier Seasons.
For example in this Season those guys who summoned “French Stewart Genie” were not the Triad, they were another group called “The Infernal Council” look it up on the Charmed Wiki. And the episode is the Season finale Be Careful what you Witch For The Infernal Council is very similar to and sometimes confused with the Triad, who were introduced in the following season. It is unknown what became of the five members of the Council.
Another Council appeared near the end of Season 4 during Cole Turner’s coronation as the Source of All Evil and during the coronation of the Seer. Many demon councils and their leaders were present for the latter, possibly including the Infernal Council. All these demons were vanquished along with the Seer.
I just watched her review on season 1 and there she just seems to search for things to complain about and ignores things that were explained clearly. She makes a point about the witch/warlock thing being confusing, but then fails to recognize the difference between warlocks and demons… Also, she discards all references to the Source, for example thinking that Hannah Webster just died for no reason. (Hannah’s dialogue even implies the Source was punishing her for failing, it’s a makes it easy moment sure, but there is evidence she was punished from an outside source, not vanquished out of thin air.) Also Prue does show remorse over Andy’s death. In the Season opener of Season 2 called “Witch Trial” the whole episode is about Prue holding back in fighting a demon called “Abraxas” who stole the Book of Shadows from another plane. It explains it’s been a couple of months sense Andy’s death and Prue spends the episode grieving over Andy, she even has a scene where she’s crying because she couldn’t save Andy.
But yeah, she does miss some things, like when she didn’t know why the enemy in Battle of the Hexes exploded when she put the belt on, even though it was explained in the episode.
Again with season 3; She neglects the fact that “The Good, The Bad and The Cursed takes place in a time loop, not the actual past. Also that episode where the girls lost their powers because they used them on each other wasn’t a contradiction either. They lost them because their bond as sisters were broken, they used their powers out of anger on each there because a rage demon amplified their frustrations toward each other. And since their powers and BOS are connected to their bond as sisters it broke that.
*She also neglects the fact that Prue fought and vanquished Vinceres while her powers were augmented by her empathy. The reason Prue’s Astra Self was able to destroy that one demon “Vinceres” in “Primrose Empath” was because she was amplified by empathy, plus it’s how she was able to do that Matrix style scene too.
There’s also Paige’s actions in Season 8. While I’ll admit Paige was worse in Season 8 compared to her in the previous 4 Seasons where she’s the only decent Charmed One besides Prue who was decent. For example, Paige is only a shrew to Billie in the first few episodes. And even thing Paige was the only one activity doing anything with Billie at all, her interactions with Billie do get better take that episode “Payback’s a Witch” where Paige, Billie and Henry get held at the bank. (Which I found to be the best episode of the Season) Also Paige does not spend the entire season asking magical creatures to do things for her, that only happened in 1 episode and the reason she did that was to hep out Henry so she could be better prepared to tell him she’s a witch. And even then it was only a Muse and a Leprechaun. And the “You owe me card” was more of a joke.
Also when the girls are in their dreams to see their greatest desire. While Paige does want to find her identity she remembers her charge being in trouble and has Billie get her out of there. Billie lets Paige go when she realized Paige cared for her charge. Paige also doesn’t complain about not being with Henry during Piper and Phoebe’s argument either, Paige only complains about it once and it was a throw away line.
I will admit In Lupa’s defence, her mistakes are fairly minor and don’t impart on her main criticisms. But they can get out of hand. For instance, she actually thought Chris slept with one of the Stillman Sisters and goes on for a whole minute about how he supposedly slept with what he thought was his aunt when really that was just a trick Chris did too fool the sisters into turning against each other.
I also agree the sisters’ resistance to actually wanting to save innocents becomes a pretty regular occurrence in the show. Though, show still manages to be enjoyable, that is when the sisters are actually doing something. I love the show but she does bring up some very valid issues. Seeing a few videos makes me see Christy’s whole reasoning about the sisters being selfish in a new light.
Being a fan of Charmed (and still am) I can easily agree with the views of the later seasons. (Especially season 8 where I hated the Charmed Ones more than Billie) While Seasons 1-4 had problems too, it could still be considered a good or decent watch. The most frustration you’d get is Phoebe in Seasons 3 and 4. Honestly I hated Phoebe in Season 3 onward, she’s as bad there as she was in the last 3rd of Season 4 and first half of Season 5 with Cole.
And even though the good ideas Charmed had were used in bad execution, lots of shows can have cheesy or even over the top cringeworthy plots, but still have other elements to be likable or even good show.. And that’s what I see in the earlier seasons of Charmed. As well as a sense of humor in most areas. It helped it get through the bad writing. However I will not excuse the later Seasons whatsoever. And I’m mostly a fan in regarding Seasons 1-4. And even Lupa mentions these seasons were at least decent in her Season 8 review.
I only ever watched an episode here or there of charmed because it was on late at night but after having watched your reviews so far, I am glad that I didn’t decide to get into watching this show. I realise that shows I did like watching had silly concepts sometimes but they usually had good characters and an overall story worth watching.
I have been watching your videos for over a year and really enjoy your style. Personally I don’t usually have a problem with ads is videos, you need to make a living (especially if this is all you do.) 2 midroll ads in a 15 minute video is a bit much. I may as well be watching tv. If the videos were 30 mins long and had 2 midrolls I wouldnt have a problem. Over the 7 videos I got 27 sets of ads with midrolls containing 2 ads each. (for anyone who wants to say use an ad blocker. I know they exist and I dont want to use one)
I dont expect you to change your practices because of what I have to say but I decided I should let you know that the amount of advertising bugs me. It hasn’t stopped me from watching though. ( On a side note I dont think the auto formatting is working properly.)
The theme song… son/heir not sun/air… blew my mind. I always thought the whole sun/air thing was the elemental-earth spirit tie in with witchcraft. But you’re right.. a theme song saying“I am the son” doesn’t make any sense in a show full of GIRLS! Maybe the song was talking about Wyatt all along… NOPE, just a stupid mistake from someone not reading the actual lyrics.
During Part 2 you say something along the lines of “why would there be a sex deadline with Leo to make Chris.. wouldn’t Chris just be younger?” Every conception is completely unique with a sperm which has a several day life period, and an egg with a short life span on the menstrual cycle. Further conceptual problems would occur if any of the 200 – 500 million other sperm get an advantage during the sexual act. Meaning that Chris could have only been conceived that one way with only a very small window of a few days, which makes the fact he interfered with his parents relationship all the more ridiculous.
I actually watched this show as reruns after school and usually got cut short by having to leave for football practice… so not only was I watching most of the episodes out of order but I was only seeing about 45 minutes of the episodes. I always assumed there was more going on that I missed, but it appears that there wasn’t. I always took the supporting cast telling of how great Phoebe is to be an indication of something I must have missed between episodes and with the endings.. now I see it was just a mess that they couldn’t resolve without trying to coarse the viewer into believing something they don’t see. Well it kind of worked on me. Now I know better.
The abridgement they use for the intro is “I am the son, I am the heir, I am human and I need to be loved, see I’ve already waited too long, and all my hope is gone.” (Unless there’s an extended version of the intro, I think that’s all, but my experience with the show is spotty.) The son/heir thing is very likely intended as a double meaning, The Smiths were sort of inclined to that kind of wordplay (off the top of my head, I remember “behind the hatred there lies a murderous desire for love”), so you could simply choose to read it as sun/air and it will sound vaguely mystical, or maybe even cherry pick to produce the remarkably apt “I am the SUN I am the heir,” since the charmed ones are the ultimate beacon of hope for humanity (look it up!) and this is a thing they inherited. And of course, they have to conceal their witchitude lest they be falsely (?) ostracized as inhuman monsters, so the next part is also apt, albeit generically so. Only that last part is confusing, I don’t see how their hope is gone. Of course, I could also get super nitpicky and point out that this specific season’s arc completely fits, seeing as it contains a son who is an heir who waited too long and all his hope is gone, in other words he’s completely subsumed by evil, but his human quality of love stays his hand from killing his brother.
I admire your optimism but there’s no way they put that much thought into it [edit: by that I mean the Charmed creative team, not the Smiths. You’re almost definitely right about the intentional homophones.] But I’ve gotta admit, I love this song. And I kinda love the cover more than the original… and I kinda love the abridged version more than the full. I, like Lupa, always thought it was “sun” and “air”. Not gonna lie: I just pretend I never read the lyrics. That song, and the triquetra of the book of shadows, forged my earliest conception of Wicca (sadly enough) and it’s still got all the nostalgias. Anyway, one part in to this review and I’m loving it, of course!
Do you get the feeling the writers gave Paige all of the moments of human decency and helping others because Combs and Milano were horrible to work with? I honestly can’t see how you ever watched this show for any length of time.
I’m still waiting for a mention of an episode about Wiccans vs Witches, like if there are actually Wiccans on the show or Witches that are also Wiccan, or seeing as how this is Charmed, some derogatroy comment from Piper about Wiccans wanting to be Witches but Wiccans are just big fakers or something.
Also, it amazes me that there are actual “evil” versions of the Charmed ones, or more evil versions. It would have been hilarious if they had pulled something like Futurama and had the big reveal be that the Charmed ones were the evil ones and the AU Charmed Ones were the good ones. But, that would be giving the show way too much credit.
I think in the show Wiccan/witch is the same thing, hence why they had the “wiccaning” ceremony. I think they also tried to tie in some Wiccan practices with their magic as well in the earlier seasons.
damn, seven parts! i am excited about this as i have never watched season 6. I couldn’t bear it. I watched season 5 by downloading episodes before it aired in French on TV and i was young so i still enjoyed it (though even at the time i found the Cole storyline was dragging along and was repetitive and honestly boring), but once it aired i guess i had finally developped some good sense and couldn’t stand watching it. i didn’t start again until the end of season 7. actually that part was airing in english pretty much at the same time season 6 was airing in french, so i just skipped the french and went straight to starting to watch in english (also i guess not uderstanding much at the time might be what helped me like it more).
Wow, part 2 is now blocked on copyright grounds by CBS CID. So CBS is descending into Scott Shaw depths of dickishness. I wonder what made season 6 part 2 stand out from the other videos that it incurred their wrath?
This is one of those shows that falls into the “I want to hurt this show but I can never hurt it the way it hurt me” category so I really appreciate an expert giving it the damn good thrashing it deserves.
I’m trying to figure out the motivation behind making Piper and Phoebe so insufferable, and I’m leaning toward either 1. the writers getting fed up and ironically making their characters SO perfect they’re virtually unlikable, or 2. if the BTS anecdote about Alyssa and what’s-her-name shooting down a script involving their characters looking bad is true, then the writers sort of getting fed up and just making them perfect people because anything else wouldn’t get past the “producers.” Why write something if it’s just going to be rejected, right? Better play it safe!
But I honestly don’t see the appeal in living vicariously (which they obviously did) and having not only powers but INCONVENIENCES from those powers. How is being in a situation to COMPLAIN appealing at all? If I had control of a character I was projecting on, I’d give them all sorts of character-developing drama and eventual happiness, not reasons to bitch. Is it like a thing where they’re SUCH awesome people, even amazing powers are beneath them? I don’t get it.
Oh well. I’ve been watching these before bed and they’re fun as heck. Thank you for making them! I’m sure they took a long time.

Part 3, 13:38. Why is Chris wearing a shirt with the Apartheid-era South African flag? A flag that had been replaced 8 or 9 years prior? And given that he’s 1) American, 2) from the future and hasn’t even been born yet, it makes even less sense.
Is…is he a racist? I suppose it would fit with the general horribleness of the Halliwells.
Hi, so it seems this might be a new-ish thing. But all of the charmed episodes have been taken down? Due to copyright claims. Do y’all plan on re-uploading them somewhere else, like Dailymotion or something. or are they just lost in the aether? I mean, I understand if you can’t. Though them taking them down is really fucked up. I’m only asking because I really like your show, manic episodes, and the charmed reviews. Hopefully, there’s something that can be done. ^^;; still sucks that it happened.

So you’re saying that Phoebe is a whoreble person?
Only 3 seasons left to make fun of. Don;t suppose you had plans for Sex in the City?
Nice try Charmed….Hong Kong is super westernized.
7 videos didn’t seem “too long” for a season; I was sad when it was over.
Did I see Canadian Film Development Corporation (aka Telefilm Canada) at the end of the credits?! My tax dollars went to that shit?!
Lol, was that a Yugioh abridged reference?
“screw the rules I have witchcraft”?
If so, well done.
damn, seven parts! i am excited about this as i have never watched season 6.
I’m sure they took a long time.
awwww, I’ve been really enojying these. Why did you remove them? 🙁 🙁 🙁
Nevermind, they are no longer downed youtube videos for some reason
HOLD ON.
