Would have been neat if they could bring in the 03 Turtles as well.

Look, I’ll be honest, I tried to watch the 2012 TMNT show and I felt like it was treating its audience like idiots. I despised the episodes I watched because I felt like I was being treated like an idiot by the script writers. Maybe it got better later, but man the first few episodes I saw were just so terribly paced…

Aaaaand… well, it doesn’t help that I also hate the ’87 cartoon series for a lot of reasons too… so sufficed to say, this wasn’t for me. Frankly, after all you’ve shown yourself on your various looks at the ’87 cartoon, including Planet of the Turtloids, can you really say the Turtles WEREN’T idiots on that show most of the time?

I’m glad you liked this crossover and all, but to me this was the meeting of the terrible and the awful…

I don’t think “idiots” is accurate, since most of the villains on the show were typically pretty dumb (watch Phelan’s 40 dumbest TMNT moments if you need that proof).  It was just a very different atmosphere slanted more toward comedy and the turtles themselves were just less dramatic and thus the stories just went from episode to episode and they just did their thing being the good guys.  The NickTurtles show started a little slow and kiddish for my tastes but it definitely got its game on later, even within the first season, so I’d say give it another shot, it pays off in spades later.

I feel like 2012 has been steadily improving as it goes and it’s 3rd season was really good.

Yes I can say that, there’s a difference between the Turtles being put into stupid situations and them actually being morons themselves.
Besides when doing a special like this it’s bad form to just shit on the low points of one of the series. Like I mentioned in this video 2003 had some damn stupid things going on in it too but if you JUST look at that and say THAT sums up that series it wouldn’t be giving it the proper credit it deserves either.

It actually does get better, except for the “in space” episode. Yeah they could be idiots at times in the bad episodes, but like Phelous said, they felt like parodies in the special and their treatment felt mean-spirited.

Awesome, can’t wait to see this episode.  I was initially pretty cold on NickTurtles but it has really grown on me over the last 3 seasons, and as you say it’s largely because of the respect for the old stuff and the references.  I’m one of like 3 people on the planet who apparently still enjoys Ninja Turtles The Next Mutation and liked Venus, and 2012 Turtles even throws in a small references to her, which as you said it’s nice that they’re trying to throw nuggets out to all fans and not isolating any.  I love how they keep bringing back new characters and can’t wait to see how they’ve done with Mona Lisa when I get up to that point.

Don’t remember the last time I saw you this happy, Phelous 🙂  Great review, I’m stoked.

My problem was more how she was written. She felt more like someone’s OC character and I didn’t like how she handled Shredder in the pilot.

He’s been doing a whole lot of horror lately. Animated horror.

If you mean regular horror as in ye olde tymes then I am pretty sure the new Cabin Fever will show up sooner or later.

Good grief, could you get anymore giddily fanboyish? Haven’t seen you grin so much since…ever come to think of it.

Not a complaint though: I’m glad you liked this crossover more then the last one: heck I liked this better then the last one, which really cheesed me off, and this is going purely on what you showed in the reviews  since as far as TMNT goes, I only saw the movies: liked the first 2 not the third; but after watching many a video of you talking about them, I really want to check out some of the cartoons.

Same with the Ghostbusters stuff: I’ve only seen one episode of the Real Ghostbusters when I was small that freaked me out so I’ve avoided it since: and yet I was really annoyed after your video about all the changes they made and I want to see the earlier episodes and Extreame Ghostbusters.

You’ve got this knack for getting people interested in a topic which is really cool: just saying 🙂

Also, great video: will you be doing one for the Michael Bay films?

I’m sure nobody else is wondering, but what do you think of the new Lord Dregg?

You’ve stated your opinion on Lord Dregg of ’87, but is this one any better in your opinion?

seeing as now he’s mostly Lord Dregg in name… I don’t they have much to compare. Hell, it’s almost like the only things they have in common are name and that they’re bad guys.

I’ll admit to not being up to speed on the new series.

It took me a bit, but waiting months in between INDIVIDUAL episodes kinda killed my interest.

Then I heard about this, and well, I couldn’t resist.

        I miss Tony Jay.

Aw yay, I’m glad you reviewed this ep, Phelous! I was going to send you a message and beg you to review this. I’m glad I didn’t bother, I should have known you would be all over this lol.

TMNT 2k12 is a show I really admire, not only for the references to previous incarnations but also because I think it’s just a good show for kids today. It doesn’t talk down to its audience with its more complex plot ideas, and it’s entertaining for kids without being super violent and having fighting just for the sake of fighting (which I hate in kids shows). Also the villains of TMNT 2k12 are some of the most fleshed out and intelligent villains I’ve seen in kids programming. Like in a lot of superhero movies/comics, the villains have complex motivations and backstories and don’t just exist to ‘do evil.’

But I’m sorry to say I think this is the first review of Phelous’ that I don’t agree with his opinion. :\ This episode left a really bad taste in my mouth and had me rolling my eyes at the screen repeatedly. I really thought Phelous would agree, since it seems to me like this ep is just a rehash of Turtles Forever. (But hey, I firmly believe in ‘to each their own’! I’m actually glad there is some positive fan reactions to this episode, since that means we will more likely see something like this again in the future. 🙂 )

    My reasons of complaint are:

1.) The 2D animation left me a little disappointed. When they were on the ’80’s world, the ’80’s turtles don’t look anything like their old cartoon selves. At least Turtles Forever got that right.

2.) They make the dumb belt buckle joke again, with the ‘current’ turtles making fun of the ’80’s turtles for their belts, which was a repeated gag in Turtles Forever. Yes, we get it! Having initials on your belt is corny! Omg let it go…

3.) The “80’s turtles don’t care about being scene on the streets” joke is here just like it was in Turtles Forever, which really pissed me off. As Phelous pointed out in his Turtles Forever review, the ’80’s guys did NOT just walk around and go into pizza parlors without a disguise of some sort. That is exactly what they try to do here. (Granted, at least it didn’t beat the ‘joke’ like a dead horse, unlike TF….)

4.) As Phelous mentioned, in this ep they ALSO visit the ‘turtles prime’ dimension which is the world of the original comic (I think they actually call it ‘turtle prime dimension’ too…) and the plot is basically a rehash from Turtles Forever but with Krang instead of Shredder. Come on, writers, that movie was SEVEN YEARS ago. You couldn’t think up more new material between then and now? (I admit I did really like that the comic turtles didn’t talk.)

5.) I have to disagree with Phelous that the writers gave respect to the ’80’s turtles in these fight scenes. When the gangs both fight Krang in that first fight, ’80’s Leo’s ‘moves’ against Krang are over-the-top and obnoxious, as if he can’t fight at all. The 2k12 turtles constantly berate the ’80’s turtles moves as being lame. (It’s not something that only Raph thinks/says.) This is EXACTLY how the ’03 turtles acted with the ’80’s turtles in Turtles Forever, insulting them for not being as good as they were in battle.

6.) In the scene where Krang fights Krang Subprime, the 2k12 turtles use the distraction as an advantage and attack the ‘droids holding them hostage, while the ’80’s turtles just stand there like morons and watch the ’12 turtles fight. WTF! That’s not how they would act in the ’80’s cartoon! They didn’t just stand around and let others fight for them. In that same scene ’80’s Raph does his joke bit where he eats a pizza like in the 80’s opening theme, which yes was very funny but he doesn’t even react as a Kraangdroid is about to shoot him. He has to be saved by 2k12 Raph. Again, this is like Turtles Forever. The ‘current’ turtles were always jumping in and saving the ’80’s turtles.

7.) 2k12 Leonardo’s repeated annoyance at ’80’s Leo for the phrase “turtle power” is pretty dumb considering the entire FIRST season of 2k12, Leo shouted the most lame catchphrases imaginable. It was actually a running gag for his character. (I guess we could consider that character development… teenagers forget their embarrassing past mistakes, I guess? It’s still annoying, but I’ll give that one a pass.)

So in conclusion, it felt to me like the plot points (and a bunch of the jokes) were completely stolen from Turtles Forever. And I didn’t feel like they did a good job representing the ’80’s turtles, especially in the fight scenes. In fact the ’80’s turtles acted pretty OOC in a lot of this…just, to a lesser extent than they did in Turtles Forever.

But like I said, everyone has their own opinions and I’m glad Phelous liked it! And actually I really liked that they got all the original voice actors back (I loved the meta joke between Raph and Don.) And I’m glad they’re going to do more crossover stuff like this in the future too. One bad ep doesn’t ruin anything for me. 🙂

You have to admit that the 80s series had the best art style & character designs by a long shot. Both the 2003 & recent series look like a 5 year old came up with the look. The fact that they half assed the 2D part in Flash Animation doesn’t help. The CGI isn’t really bad, more like plastic toys, or maybe more video-game like. Style kinda makes me think of bit of Skysaga, if you ignore its obvious Rayman influence.

I love it when an old voice cast gets back together, like what Funimation did when Slayers got a new TV series 10 years latter. Speaking of anime, have you seen the “Mutant Turtles: Superman Legend” anime yet? It starts off with the 80s TMNT art style & then it gets completely ridiculous.

    Galaxy unicorn. lol.

A DVD of those 2 anime TMNT episodes was actually the 1st thing I bought off ebay way way back. When you actually did money orders on there. It’s something I’ll do a video on eventually, just haven’t gotten to it yet.

I’m only guessing, so don’t throw too much stock into it, but I figured the flash stuff was done for budget reasons.

It’s a lot simpler and far more cost-effective, isn’t it?

I don’t know what’s up with their budget, since that seems to be the logical reason behind the gigantic waiting periods in-between episodes in a single season.

I’m also saddened that modern tastes don’t appreciate the hand drawn and painted look of the 80s and 90s when television animation reached something of a pinnacle.

While the 80’s Ninja turtles was a pretty decently animated show, we probably won’t get something that looks like it or some fo those Disney Afternoon and DCAU stuff from that era ever again.

Yay! I was hoping you’d at least seen it.

Flash can look very good; Homestar Runner, Neurotically Yours, Aaagh! The Mr. Hell Show….. The first two I mention only had a maximum of two animators who could spit out 7 minutes of lovely flash animation a week. That’s what makes the flash animation in this so cringy…Well that & the character designs.

The Disney Afternoon was the best thing Disney ever did. I still can’t figure out why they shitcanned it.

This whole series is just very fun and well made… it got me back into TMNT after literally two decades I haven’t seen them. I’m also glad that it wasn’t cancelled to make something more resembling the new movies, unlike Hasbro would have done *thinks back to Trasformers Animated with a sad face*…
